I have one of those.
I replaced it with a Steinberg card, which I replaced with an Audiophile2496.
The Vortex2's were good gaming cards around 3 years ago. They've since went under. I think Creative bought them out.
If I remember correctly, Microsoft wrote some new drivers for it so that all the Aureal users still out there could have rudimentary driver support under WinXP.
It works pretty well for games like Half-Life/Counter-strike in that you can have positional/environmental audio type of effects while you're playing.
If you're just messing around with audio and music, it should work fine or with some fiddling around.
Might be hella noisy for recording audio and stuff. Don't expect to get real low latencies out of it.
The quality of the device drivers are about as crucial to a soundcard as the hardware. Since driver support is pretty much non-existent, you might consider looking into another card if this one doesn't fit your needs.
There's a website called Vortex of Sound (or something like that). You should be able to find some info on the last set of drivers that were available for it. I think the Microsoft/vortex drivers are automatically installed for you if you are using WindowsXP.
