Hat STYLE. Not contents.
Continuing with our theme of songs that are just summaries of works of fiction: Fight Club (The movie, not the book).
MP3 | Flac

This was tough to mix. My computer balked at the 70 vocal tracks for the gang chorus!

As always, comments and notes are helpful.

Fight club, fight club. I wanna start a fight club.
Fight club, fight club. Bask in anarchy.
Fight club, fight club. We wanna start a fight club.
Fight club, fight club. Fighting you and me.

I shop at IKEA, and I shop at the mall.
And then on the weekend, I will fight you all.
Because I saw this movie; it really changed my life.
Like an AC/DC lyric "I don't need no gun or knife."

repeat chorus

I dream of a future where every man is free.
But only when I'm sleeping, which happens quite rarely.
Me and Robert Paulson and Tyler Durden
will bring this new order with Project Mayhem.

repeat chorus.

Rule 1: Don't talk about Fight Club.
Rule 2: Don't talk about Fight Club!
Two men to a fight. No shirt no shoes.
Fights go as long as they need to.
Pass out or tap out and you lose.
Your first night you fight!

repeat chorus.

Lol. I never saw the movie, but from what I've heard about it, this seems pretty accurate. The vocals are pretty thin and AM radio-like. Very midrangey. The drums are kind of messy. They need to be tighter with a cleaner presence. Cool song though. It almost plays like it's for kids. :D

VHS songs justify my existence.

Great tune Steve.

I am at work atm but the drums sound kinda like they are sitting in the back of everything.

The clarity of your tracks are getting much better.

What do you use for a mic for your vocals. Do you always intentionally shoot for that sound on your vocals. They never seem to stray from that 'sound' the AM radio thing Gerg mentioned.

Also, i have a process for capturing gang vocals that doesn't warrant 70 vocal tracks lol. PM me if you want em.

*NOTE* Why won't i share this process openly, well i'll tell you, i don't support alot of these new pop-punk bands that use gang vocals in every song casue gang vocals are the new 'break-down-core' so by being withholding i feel i am doing my part to ensure this garbage doesn't get recorded....

But steve if your interested you know what to do.

Not bad, VHS, but I'd have to say that the tone of this song doesn't fit (in my opinion) the mantra of "Fight Club". Your song sounds like a toy for children, whereas the feeling from the movie was quite the opposite. Recording-wise, this definitely has your unique signature all over it.

Thanks for sharing!

I'd love to listen in on your technique. I don't use them often, but when clients want them, I usually have 20-30 tracks of vocals to record. Please... Do tell!

The Toy Dolls laugh at gang vocals being a new trend.

Ha! I love the Toy Dolls!

Thanks, all!

Just because I'm plagiarizing the plots of books and movies, doesn't mean I'm playing them straight! :D I figure a sarcastic interpretation of the story is more true to Paliniuch(how the heck do you spell this?!)'s vision.

I do most of my vocals through a Sampson S12 (dynamic). I've got an MXL 990 condenser, but it's glitchy, so I don't use it often. And I have a pretty set FX chain that I run them through after that (de-esser (ReaComp), EQ, Compression, single-reflection stereo reverb).

I'll see if I can clean up the drums any. This part is a little slower and has better separation than a lot of drums that I've done, so I might be able to adjust things.

I use gang vocals moderately often, so yeah! Please do PM that technique, Atom.

The lead guitar is through a wah. That's probably where a lot of the AM-y sound is coming from too.

Second mix: mp3 | flac

I manually shifted some of the more egregious drum flubs and turned up the kick and snare.

I'm really having trouble getting kick to cut through my mixes. Anyone have any recommendations there?

Your updated mix seems to be a dead link VHS. Good fun song though, your turnout rate tunes is impressive - every time I come on here there's a new tune from you!
