The Kiss box set was the worst. Mainly because I have the original records and CDs to compare it to. Mixes from the 70's don't have the potential to get as loud as stuff nowadays, however, someone blindly smashed the shit out of classic stuff to get it to 'compete'

Could you give an example of a pro CD that has these undesirable qualities? Again, just as a reference for me for what not to do.

Vapor Trails by Rush.

There is an article by Rip Rowan somewhere out there about it , he analyzes it. If you listen to it, you can actually hear the crappiness. Tis a shame, its a mighty fine album.
