Anyone know if a specific guitar pickup is suppose to be matched with a certain rating of the volume POT?

all i know is there are....

250k
500k
1meg ? rated volume pots

1) how does each value effect the output(tone/gain) of the pickup ??
2) does a pickup have a marking on it that says what value to use ??
3) Which one will give me the smoothest taper on the actual output of the pickkup ?

thanks

Rule of thumb is 250K on single coils and 500K on humbuckers. Higher values lose less highs, so the 1M is used if you want to preserve highs, especially when volume is set less than 10. A 500K would have a similar effect on single coils.

That's for passive pickups, actives use different values.
