I spent about 4 months working in Clinton and living near Far Hills (Morris County I think) - not your typical view of Jersey. Hate to admit it, if not for all the Yankee fans there, I might've enjoyed it
...Sort of on topic, though...when I use my Mackies the way I described (mics into mic pres - out the insert to the 1010) sometimes the level is a bit too hi in Sonar. I back off the trim - all the way, sometimes, but I still get a level - sometimes pretty hot, too. I'm thinking that Trim is not designed to cut the signal, just tweak it between a certain range. Any ideas?

Yeah the area around Clinton is very nice. So are some of the shore areas and parts of So. Jersey and North Jersey. Most people, though, only get to see the area around Newark airport and the NJ Turnpike, and that's their view of NJ. 
As for the Mackie, in a sense you are correct. The trim is only designed to "boost" the mic signal, not to cut it. However the mic signal should be in the low milivolt range (5mv), while the line signal needed to feed your sound card needs to be about 1V (0.5 - 2V). So I don't see how you can be getting a strong signal with the trim all the way down - unless there is some minimum signal boost going on, even at "0".
I'll check mine out, but I'm pretty sure I get pretty close to no signal at all with the trim down. Generally I find I am running the trim between 12:00 and 2:00 to get a decent signal.

More specifically, Mike, it's my condensers that get hot: 2 Behringer ECM-8000's (my poor man's overheads) and my Marshall V67 (on hi-hat when not on vocals)...maybe phantom power contributes to this.
