look at the picture...

what would be the best way to solve this? Compression? If so, is there a preset here that would do the trick?

I hope I didn't scare away the good peep with that first gruesome image.....

Hey I know I've had a lot of questions lately, and I will have more, but please know I have been doing my homework: I downloaded the manual and printed off all 250 pages, put it in a binder and added tabs, I've started another notebook with info I've printed off from posts here...sonusman's secrets, sayer's studio building stuff, and all you peep that help me out: especially dobro, camn, mastahnke, ds_sultan, and nw_duffer.

Bear with me a lot of the terminology is new to me as well.

Yeah, that first image is unnerving - you shouldn't put those things in your mouth - you don't know WHERE they've been...

Anyway, what happened at 1.55 - the mic stand fall over? :D Compression would influence it a lot, yeah, although from the image it looks like it might be unfixable clipping - that peak looks awfully thick. I use compression when I'm tracking rather than in the software, so I don't have any experience with CEP's compressor. Here's a setting I use on my outboard compressor for vocals, though - it's quite gentle. Might be a place to start, if CEP works like outboard compressors.

Threshold: +10 (varies, depending on the song - sometimes lower, like 0)
Ratio: 3.5:1
Attack: 3
Release: 1.5

I took a look at the compressor in CEP, and the part that confuses me is the Gain Processor and Level Detector in the attack/release section. What's all that about? If nothing else, this post will keep the thread at the top of the page until Camn or Sultan notice it. :)

Thanks dobro.

Can anyone describe the purpose and practical application of a Gain Processor and a level detector?

no. But what I would do there is this.

Highlight the peak.

Goto "transform...amplitude...envelope"
and create an envelope that starts at 100% and ends at 100%... but drops to 75 or 50% in the middle.

listen and see if it sounds natural still.

Repeat if necessary... or go back and try different settings.

AND that should take care of it. I always adress fuck ups like that on a case by case basis.. and stay away from compressors and stuff to catch them.

btw, I like Sonic foundry's track compressor better than the CEP stuff. and it plugs into CEP, being cool like that.

xoxo

You dont say.

What is that Sonic Foundry thing? Does it cost money?

I'll try the envlepoe thing fer sher.

Hey Rats, based on the second picture, what else is running on your machine at the time you are tracking. I got a glimpse of your system tray and it looks like a lot of things are running. If one of these other programs is causing a system glitch at the time you have your spike...well, enough said.

You should check that out as the reason you have the spike. Or do you already know what that is.

Nice thought Sultan, but that was just what was open when I started the thread, not when I recorded the track.

The track was bass guitar run direct, no compression, no direct box, old strings.

Is there a general consensus that the Cool Edit compression in the Dynamics processing sucks? Admittedly I'm green in the proper use of compression. I've owned an ARION compresseor stomp box I've used as a guitar effect and on vocals when I used to record on the portastudio, but that was analog with I think three or four little knobs I would tweak. It helped keep the levels constant, but was very limited in the sound quality department.

I'm trying to get a better grasp of compresion, and all the talk around and the articles by Sonus and _____ seem pretty informative. Is it going to help with Cool Edit, though?

you know... Im not sure WHERE i got this sonic foundry thing. I think it maybe it bundled with SoundForge in DirextX style... and when I install SF, it installs the compressor into ever DirectX Compatible prog....? but that doesnt make sense. All I know is I reinstalled one day, and there it was.

xoxo

"All I know is I reinstalled one day, and there it was. "

Honest, officer - that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :D

Sound Forge is software, and unless they're still doing stuff at 16-bit, they're worth taking into consideration. :D

DirectX is one kind of software plug-in, some of which are downloadable and free, the best ones of which you have to pay for. Well, maybe - what do I know? Another kind of plugin is VST.

I haven't used any plugins to date, which is why I'm so unknowledgeable about them. :)

directX is like a language for plug ins. CEP is a MultiTrack prog... which you know... and SoudForge is a WAVE Editor.. no multitrack capabilities. SF has a great tool called CD Architect.. which is what I use it for...since the whole prog only runs at 16-bit.

ANYWAY...CEP and SF BOTH support DirectX plug-ins (so does WINAMP, incidentally..)...which you can find by searching...theres a lot of free ones and a lot of cheap ones and some expensive ones, too. They are basically Virtual effects processors...written in the DirectX code, as opposed to (like Dobbie said) VST code, which Cubase uses.

ANYWAY. the compressor thing is KINDA like this other thing that happened.

I was doing a fresh 98 install.. and I installed Winamp BEFORE I installed my DSP FX group of DirectX effects (by Echo)...anyway, after I installed winamp AND SF AND CEP.. I installed DSPFX..and it installed my favorite reverb to ALL three programs...all in one shot. I guess it finds ALL directX compatible programs and puts itself into it.

SO im assuming that the SF track compressor is part of the SF install, and does the same thing... cus Ive never got any Sounic Foundry (the makers of sound forge) effects... paid, free or demo.

xoox

I see. Have you found any of those free direct-X plug ins worthwhile?

While on that subject, do you know where I can download a large diaphram condenser mike? Man that would be cool.

I still haven't had a chance to try out your (Camn) envelope trick and your (dobro) compression settings. I'm trying to lay my tracks first now, then I'll go back after and fix them all up. I will let you know what happens.
