can someone please give me an exact definition but in laymans terms of what 'volume envelopes' are? im just so lost with all this terminology. i think i know what it is, but im dumb when it comes to proper terminology. this place needs a freaking glossary.

in a digital workstation each track can contain volume automation. This is just automatic volume changes that the computer plays back for you. There is a line on each track that represents the volume, and you play dips, peaks, ramps, etc in this line so that the volume changes.
Look at the picture below...that line is connected with a series of nodes or points that represent a certain dB level. When I press play, the volume will be affected this way

In MOST recording multitrack recording software, there's an option of putting an "envelope" over an individual track. Envision a line over the waveform in the middle (no cut, no gain). At any point along this line where you'd like a volume change, be it cut or boost, you can click on this line and create "nodes" or points to start and stop making a hinge to track that change. The you can grab the line or one of these nodes and pull it up or down. On playback, the volume of that track will follow this line (envelope). Envelopes can be set up for panning too so you can automate the dynamics in a mix.

okay, thanks for the quick replies. i understand what youre saying.

ill explain what ive been doing. ive been doing something similar to what yall described, except that i do it manually. for example ill find the section thats too loud, zoom in on it, locate the exact points that need addressing, and split the track right at the beginning and ending of the section thats too loud. then ill just manually drop the volume level of that piece in relation to the rest of the audio clip. then ill play it back, and if its good to go, it stays that way. thats basically using a 'volume envelope', but not with automation. am i right? should i not be doing it my way?

Well that will work, but if you just open up the volume envelope view, you can manually "draw" the volume however you want, and you don't need to go through the process of splitting every clip. You can just add the nodes and it's probably more precise than the way you're doing it.

okay then, sounds like i need to give it a try. im using cubase le and i havent seen anything like that in the software, but that certainly doesnt mean its not possible. i just havent figured it out yet. now that im clear on what it is, i need to refer back to the ol manual. thanks a lot. :)
