voltage question for my old reel to reel.

hello,
I had trouble getting my old reel to reel batteries to stay on the way they had been designed, so i put them end to end
in the diagram they were set up with both positives facing the middle and the two outer grounds seperated,
by changing this set up, did i change the voltage? It kinda sounds a little different now, although i have yet to clean the head with alcohol swab.

It has been my experience that with any device that runs on batteries exclusively, if you put even one battery in the wrong way, you don't get a different sound. You get no sound or operation from the unit.

How you are claiming to reverse polarity on your recorder's batteries and still have it work makes no sense to me unless the unit is running from the AC mains which might automatically shut off the battery feed. And therefore won't make any difference.
