Frankly, I'm a little miffed by the responses. Almost everyone is talking about the mic yet it is the ONLY consistant piece of equipment between the two setups.

But the fact that every other piece of equipment *around* the mic is different means that, practically speaking, it is not the same mic. You can't isolate one element out of many and then expect it to sound the same as when it is surrounded by very different gear.

He said he has the same monitors too. So, the two "biggies", both mechanical transference devices are the same. Anything else different would be somewhat subtle in comparison.

$20 says that if we teach him how to compress the voice well, he is going to be VERY VERY VERY close to what the other studio was doing for him.

I suppose youre just going to tell him to get a behri EQ module and EQ the daylights out of it. :p :D

Woohoo! I'm going to come back tomorrow and read the next 100 posts in this thread.

Nahhhhhhhh..in this one, I am going to tell him how to compress the hell out of it with a Composer! ;)

But, he is working in software. Plenty we can do there!

Petsy and Ozraves, thanks for your suggestions. FV, yes, teach me how to compress the voice! This is all very new to me. I have started to play with the Pro Tools plug-in compressor, Dynamics III. There is also a DigiRack Dynamics II compressor - which I haven't played with. Again, I'm just doing a speaking voice, no singing or instruments. Any help would be appreciated.

The Safe Sound P1 is the shit for VO work! All-in-one channel strip, the best!

Is there a place here in the states that sells that compressor?

TIA,

JK

.....I'm with FV on this one.....compresssion and/or normalizing......

I already gave some suggested settings to try in my 3rd post in this thread.

Don't waste your money on an outboard compressor. If you recorded your source well, the pro tools compressor is more then enough.

It's important you don't get tricked into an un-necessary gear purchase here dude, when you haven't learned how to use some compression properly yet! There isn't a golden bullet and you should get perfectly good results with what you have. The only thing you might need is a pop filter if you don't already have one.
