Vocoder

Can anyone tell me what a vocoder is, and what exactly does it do. Why do performers use them
 
a vocoder ummm..... kinda puts the 2 signals together and transposes one on top of another I think. thats how they get those wild robot vocals and ones that sound like guitars too, I think on enigma that chicks voice sounds like a drippy keyboard on one of the songs, maybe someone else could explain it better
 
Basically a control signal (usually vocals) in one channel (or right) is used to modulate another signal (keyboard, synth, etc) in a second channel (or left). Makes the keyboard, etc sound like it is talking (robot voice). At least that's what my Behringer DSP1000P manual says.
