should ur vocals be higher than ur music when mixing rap or hip hop.
 
There is no should. You do what feels best for you create something awesome.

But I would have it at least as high as the music and centered.
 
If you turn the volume all the way down so you can barely hear it, and you can hear the vocals then that is good.
 
Turning down the room volume is a good trick on many instruments -

This opens up a whole can of "sonic space" worms. (Sonic Space Worms? Could be a horror movie also... :))

On almost any given mix, any given instrument should be able to be turned up or down a good amount without seeming to overpower or disappear. This is the whole concept of sonic space.

Obviously, this is more difficult in many genres than others. But think about it - Imagine any Zepplin tune - You could turn the drums, guitar, bass, vocal, whatever - up or down quite a bit, and it would still sound fine.

We used to call it "mixes that could mix themselves" and they were very common. It's just not like that anymore for some reason...

So, let's all try to put that little extra "space" in our mixes using recording techniques and EQ until everything just sits right regardless of the volume.

We should all work on that more.

My mixes are no nowhere near perfect and are lacking many things...but what Massive Master just described is exactly what I've been looking for. In the recordings that I admire most that "sonic space" element seems to be a common thread. I'll hear an instrument playing a background part at a very low volume relative to the rest of the mix, yet it can be heard perfectly. Maybe everyone has had this same sensation before, but I liked the way Massive described it. Everytime I hear something like that I think...Why can I not do that!!!???

That's is the ultimate goal.
 
Massive - your message is understood (at least intellectually if not, due to inexperience, viscerally) but don't you think that John Paul Jones does have a point when he bitches about how quiet his bass was in Zep's mixes?
