Well, my vocalist is in the mix very well. However, I cant seem to get the right sound of him. It either sounds muffled, or sounds too harsh. Im trying to get it to sound good, but also not away from the rest of the mix. Iam mixing on a Tascam 424MkIII which also recorded the song. Any ideas??

It all starts with the way it was recorded..... you can't decide at mix-time how a track should sound - that's way too late!

yea i know. But is there anything I can possibly do considering its already been recorded. Also, before we record a song, I try to get the mix right, but Im doing it through headphones. Is that good or bad?

Actually, tracking through headphones isn't a "super" bad thing... The big thing you want to find is a relationship between the vocals and the rest of the instruments. If you find that relationship in the phones, it should be close in the rest of the world.

Once it's on tape, obviously EQ and compression are some good tools (if you have inserts), but you're only going to get it as good as the track's potential will allow.
