i am relatively new to recording and at the the moment im recording my vocals with backing tracks, the problem i have is for the first half of the songs i record the mix sounds good but as the song progresses and the music builds towards the end the vocals begin to get lost behind the music until you can barely hear the vocals, is there a way i can get round this ??

many thanks

A couple of things:

1: compression on your vocals will even out the levels and help them stand out a little more. If you're using a lot of reverb, use less, because that will move the vocals further back.

2: it is not unheard of to ride/automate faders and/or use a volume envelope to increase the volume of the vocals a couple of dB during the chorus, etc. experiment with it.

Also, consider whether some of the instrumentation that's coming in is fighting for the same frequency range as the vocals - EQ is your friend.

Thanks for that i will give those ideas a try, just out of curiosity what is a volume envelope ???

An envelope is an effect. It gives you the choice to change the Attack, Delay, Sustain and Release of your audio.

hi

Those are vaulable and important tools when it comes to mixing..remeber youre not mixing just youre voice but youre mixing the whole music ... where voice i just another element..

after youre done compressing,eq'ing, and adding Time based effects.you will also have to consider balancing all the individual tracks.. and make sure they are all the right levels.. if youre drums are two loud its obviously gonna mask youre vocals .. coz when compared to drums they are no as powerfull ..so you will have to play around youre faders a bit.....and also space youre instruments in the stereo field ..so that everything is not right at the center and clustered around there...so experiment with that too... along with youre compression &automation
