hey guys

i bought a book on mixing about a month ago and been learning all the no no's in the mixing world. along with peeping around the boards.
one of the things ive been doing wrong is when you add a bunch of reverb like i love to do... it starts to sound muddy in the mix... then you have to either roll a bunch of bottom off it or use less reverb.
the amount of things to learn with a mix is endless.
i also bought some vocal samples to add a little more ground in this song.

well.... as BSABBATH says... listen if you dare :)

thanks for your input

It sound's great.
What book is that by the way?
I'm too much of a newbie to really comment, but everything sound's like it's in the right place and all part's are very distinguishable. .........Joe:D

I can't believe I'm the first. When I see your name and post in the clinic, it's a sure listen. Just got home, a little drunk, been playing some golf (rare), just caught a big one, and damn, I listen to this shit. And I mean loud. The vox is the bomb, dude. And you know I like the playing. Thanks. A lot.

thanks for the listen... :)

the book i got is called The Mixing Engineer's Handbook ... there are soo many good reference books out there that there is no single good one to buy. but this book is pretty good at covering some tricks and tips that the big boys use. and of course you could gather up all the knowledge youd ever need by just hanging around these HR messege boards
its a great book to use.....
remember knowledge is power! :)

great to hear from ya! :)

hey,

really nice!!!

Great sound to it!

are some of those fruityloops sounds?

the guitar musicianship and recording is brilliant

this is the kind of thing i could hear being in the soundtrack of a movie.

I`d be happy to pull a cd with this this one out of the rack over in the section with red dust and spanish lace.... superb.. :)

Hey Jeff, You've done it again! If its not too much , can you give me the whole scoop on those Guitar tracks? Mic placement, type, and what you did to get that full rich sound!!

because this soundsFantastic
Thanks
Bill

Doesn't sound muddy to me. Sounded nice. Yes it's very "reverby." But the verbs you choose usually, if not always, fit the type of music well. It fit well here anyway.

I want to hear YOU sing some time. You wussy. :D

I'm not sure I like the techno-sounding drums. They sort of grew on me, but I'm still wondering if there's something more suitable to your style.

Good job.

I actually thought the snare sound was a little dry compared to the other instruments, which sound great. How did you record the acoustic. Sounds amazing!

Kick ass. Loved it. What did you use for percussion? Was that you doing the vocals? I loved that.

Great tones as always, Jeff. That vocal sample thing was wild. Sounded kinda like auto-tune on acid. :) Kinda like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as a teenager or something. Pretty neat what technology can do though, eh?

This is a very nice arrangement. And ya, it's good to see you paying more attention to your reverb. Now your playing has more clarity, which in your case, is a very good thing.

By the way, is that a Taylor? Sounds great!

Cool tune Jeff!
Vocal samples were a nice touch.

Guitars sound bigger and better than ever!
Great playing as always man.

Drums sound really good on this.

I especially enjoyed the clarity of the hard strumming parts, tough to get without distortion.
You have to share your secret recipe!

Another fine piece!
(I was hoping to hear you sing though.):D

TexRoadkill

hi tex... appreciate the comments about the overall mix. I was shooting for exactly what you descibed.. so im glad this is coming through good on other sound systems.. thanks! :)

yiordanaki

hey thanks alot for the great words. all the percussion and weird noises are coming from my triton keyboard. fruityloops does have some cool sounds, though i havent went farther than the trial version to see what it really has. again thanks!

Toki987

hey toki... havent heard of red dust and spanish lace... but just looked on the net and saw John Parsons... so this is on my new must hear list... thanks for the suggestion and listen!

hi Bill... im using the mc012 matched pair mics into a rnp with slight reverb. my mics are setup X/Y about 8-10 inches from the guitar panned hard right/left (100%L 100%R). i have to say that most of the tone i get is from my hands and the way i pick, so there is no secret magic to mixing/recording an acoustic. what you hear is what you get. half of the time im playing with my fingers and half with the pick... depends what timbre im looking for at what particular time in the song. your 90% to your sound already just by having your player and his hands. your equiptment is the other 10%. also, try taking the time and playing your guitar with no effects... the more effects you run the greater the tone loss. ive heard really nice things come out of cheap crappy guitars. feel free to ask more questions... i enjoy answering them.. thanks for listening

TripleM

hey i am working on singing :) just need to work on it a little bit more... but if i can keep getting my hands on these great sounding samples.. i might just stop practicing the vocals :)
about the drums... i hear what your saying... im just trying to add a little twist to the normal jazz/pop drum..

when i was writing this i was wondering if i could come close to getting a neil pert drum sound with a Depeche mode bass line and some smooth jazz melody with some indian chant over it... not sure if anybodys ever done it... but im giving it a shot! :)

ashulman

many thanks for your support....
i just wrote a couple comments above on how i recorded the acoustic... so i'll copy and paste it for ya right here... " im using the mc012 matched pair mics into a rnp with slight reverb. my mics are setup X/Y about 8-10 inches from the guitar panned hard right/left (100%L 100%R). i have to say that most of the tone i get is from my hands and the way i pick, so there is no secret magic to mixing/recording an acoustic. what you hear is what you get. half of the time im playing with my fingers and half with the pick... depends what timbre im looking for at what particular time in the song. your 90% to your sound already just by having your player and his hands. your equiptment is the other 10%. also, try taking the time and playing your guitar with no effects... the more effects you run the greater the tone loss. ive heard really nice things come out of cheap crappy guitars. feel free to ask more questions... i enjoy answering them.. thanks for listening"

thanks a bunch for your ears!

JR#97

hey ..that would be cool if i could sing like that :) I used vocal samples from East West sound samples... they got really good reviews so i went out and bought them and am very happy.
even though i have Drumkit from hell drum samples i used my triton keyboard for the drum sounds. the drum samples arnt as good as on drumkit from hell, but i didnt have the samples yet before i started this song... so history made up his mind.
thanks alot for the listen!

SLuiCe

hey tom
Those were vocal samples ... so if you thought that was me.. i fooled ya :) yeah.. i didnt know reverb made so much of a deal when its used inside a mix with other instruments.
if you playing a solo instrument its no big deal.. add as much reverb as you want, but add reverb to a 40 track tune and you have the 40 mushketeers.
Oh... i wish that is a Taylor im playing :) its just my trusty Takamine.. not the best sounding acoustic, but i can romance her into a ambient purr.
thanks for your choclea!

btw your creepy avatar has returned  ... she looks like shes from children of the corn

muzeman

hi pete
great to hear from ya... im happy you like the clarity of everything.. it was really what i was shooting for, because more of my past music with missing alot of detail because of not paying attention to such things as reverb... but with awsome comments like yours.. it looks like im on the right track! talk to ya soon and thanks a bunch!

Nope, I didn't think it was a 26 year old white kid from Chicago... :)

Jeff,

this is a damn clean recording and mix.......and those samples fit the arrangement to a T......

on a totally unrelated note, "Felicity" just rocks ......
(but change the snare sound)

Hey Jeffy,
Absolutely beautiful acoustics..... as usual. ...and your studies are time well spent, the recording and verb usage is pristine. ...very very nice. You have a really nice touch on the guitar with regards to compression/limiting.... never too much, nor too little. Somebody mentioned vocs. I know its not really your bag, but it would really be a treat to hear you sing someday. ....dont gimme that "i cant sing" tripe... Someone w/ an ear as articulate as yours can certainly hit pitch, that would be good enough for me.

beautiful bro, gw/5

:O Well, a SURPRISING beginning. I really wasn't expecting that middle-eastern (?) stuff there. Mixing is very very good. The song seems to be mostly a guitar solo-based thing. After one listen I didn't remember much changes in the song. The atmosphere is achieved well, and I can appreciate it. As a song it's pretty backgroundish at places, though.

Toki987

alirght.. sounds good. im looking foward to checking this out. thanks again!

hahh!

i wonder what acoustic guitar your gonna end up getting?

when i goto the music store i always enjoy the sound of the taylor and martin acoustics. but they have some cheaper guitars out now that sound pretty nice also.

that brings up my dream from last night...... i was in this weird dungeon and next thing i know im holding a guitar that is shaped like a squash and this thing is about 3 1/2 feet long with a hollow neck! crazy! and when i played a note it sounded like nothing ive ever heard... it had this natural reverb that put any tc electronics reverb 6000 to shame. it was amazing! i was pissed when i woke up.
boy... i wish i could tape my dreams

had to share that

Gidge

thanks a bunch gidge!
regaurding my other song... i was thinking about going back and remixing a few of my songs, mixwise. that was actually one of the songs the i might fix up a bit.
thanks for listening.

Guernica

thanks alot g. im sure you dont have all the time in the world changing dirty diapers :) so i appreciate the listen. I really have been practicing my singing lately... ive just always been self conscience of my voice coming from a non-musical family that never sang in the shower.
you will hear my vocals one of these days... i'll definitely keep ya posted!

CrankyOne

hey cranky.... i kinda like the backgroundish ... ambient texture that i tried to deliver. probably wont be as appealing to most as a vocal tune, but its really what i enjoy doing most... putting together arrangement of many instruments... as this one had 50 tracks including midi.
thanks for checking it out!
