I have an SM-57 which I bought for recording guitar - and have since been using it for vocals (both live and recording purposes) but up until now, never actually thought if it was actually any good for vocals as it is predominantly advertised as an instrument mic...

Does anyone know please?

Thanks!

You can use any mic on any source. People have used the 57 for vocals live and on record for years. It might not work on your voice, it may be great on mine. The 58 is the same mic as the 57 but for the capsule, many people don't know this. The 58 is known as a vocal mic for the most part but again, people have and do use them on all kinds of instruments, whatever works.

Here compare it to a condenser mic on the vocal to see how it perform, and if you like it

As far as I know, the 57 is considered a "studio workhorse" microphone, where you can basicaly use it for anything. The truth is, you can use any microphone (more or less) for anything (except ribbon mics of kick drums - big no-no). I believe the 57 and the 58 actually have the same capsule, and the grill is what's different about them...

Basically, my advice to you is to try the mic and see if you like how it sounds on the vox. If you don't like it, don't use it. But never rule it out. Remember what it did to the voice; you may end up needing to record something later that the mic would compliment perfectly. Just trust your ear; in fact, it is music.
