I understand that Se Electronics do a SE reflection filter for around £200.

I it worth getting?, do they really make much differnce or is it just as good to have a few pillows behind your mic?

Yes. It's called the Reflexion Filter and it is worth getting. Better than pillows behind your mic. There are other brands out there as well.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I was thinking of buying some acoustic tiles and making a homemade version. What do you think?

That's what I use and they look and work great. RealTraps are too expensive in my opinion. Buying the raw materials and making them yourself can save you more money. This site also has the raw materials as well as already-made panels in different sizes and thicknesses.

Me being me, I didn't want to spend loads of money on something like the Reflexions filter (which IMO isn't so versatile) so instead I came up with my own solution.

I found a guy on eBay who was selling Rockwool panels very cheaply. I bought 5 packs of 4, 1x0.6x0.1m 100kg/m3 panels at a cost of £6 per pack! I then got some very cheap cotton dust sheets (ones that decorators use) and sewed up bags for them with little attachments on the bag to hang them from stands, or on hooks with wire from the ceiling.

When tracking vocals, I hang the bags off spare boom stands around my vocal mic - behind the mic and behind the singer. The results that I got were certainly value for money; well worth my £50 outlay and they are certainly versatile. I can hang them above drum kits too, use them on acoustic guitar recordings, and electric guitar recording - in fact just about anything. :D

Just my opinion!

Hi pez

Its great to meet a fellow Londoner. can yo get the rockwool panels in Wicks.

Your idea sounds fantastic.

I saw a photo somewhere of a guy who made his own portable vocal booth using those large coolbags you get when going on a picnic and he had made a wall of some acoustic diamond shape foams inside. I looked great and he said it workerd wonders.

But pez your invention looks more versaltile.

Glad you like my idea :)

I can't remember for sure but I think I've read things that recommend not using the stuff from Wickes. They have a limited range and I think it is quite expensive.

Try Travis Perkins. I got the Rockwool RWA45 Slabs (£30ish from TP). (I actually used 45kg/m3 not 100kg/m3 like I said...doh!). The rigid slabs are what you're after. I got mine on eBay, worth a look if you can be patient enough.

Check out http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm for more info; it has a huge list of absorption coefficients including the Rockwool range as well as links to more resources on acoustic treatments.
