Hopefully some of the long term members will give me a pass and go ahead and listen to this.

It is just recorded over a karaoke track. So while mix is out, hopefully I can get some feed back on the recording itself of the vocal, how it was treated, and overall opinions. I welcome all feedback from anyone about anything.

The vocal is recorded using
Presonus 16.0.2
AKG C214 mic

Vocal effects are pretty limited, I tried not to do much to it because I would like opinions on the voice as much as anything.

Sounds like a decent recording to me. Vocal seems a bit dark for a condenser. Did you cut some upper frequencies out?

I think the performance is great! Just not not hearing the upper mids and highs coming through. It seems your voice has the timbre there, I am just not hearing it enough.

I myself would be using some compression on the main vocal track. Not to control levels as much as to pull out the character of your voice. There is something really cool in there. I am just not hearing it come out as it should here.

Thanks very much (honestly that's what I'm trying to figure out most). Steeno in helping me yesterday was really saying I needed to put some stuff out and get opinions. This was the first thing I could get recorded and uploaded. The EQ takes out a lot of low, and raises some mids a TINY bit, but nothing else. Also a little reverb obviously

Every time I get into one of these guitar/vocal projects, I just wish I had the vocal track alone to play with. I can't describe what it is I would do, as well as I could find what works by experimenting with it. Giving advice is not easy without having the track in front of me, and doing what I feel works.

Steeno is great at this sort of genre. He was right in getting you to post. Keep it coming man. We will all learn from this.

Jimmy was nice enough to work on this for me so I thought I should post up his result.

Thanks again Jimmy!

Woah, I already thought the first version you did sounded good vocal wise, but I love what Jimmy did to it, it does bring out your voice a whole lot better. Your voice is really fantastic by the way, it sounds great when you're belting it out. Really love the tune as well, good choice. Cool that you posted something as well. :)

Hi polarity, the recording seems great!
Good job.

The voice is great, as you said you didn't edit it much so we can give you some ideas, these are some things I would try:

1) I guess the reason we feel that the vocals are not bright enough is because you may need to cut some frequencies in the mid-low area, you know the misery range.
Cut the mud and they will shine, at least I would try it ^^

2) Tempo Delay or even Ping Pong Delay matched with the tempo of the song, and cut some higher frequencies of the delay to blend in the mix easier.

3) Maybe some reverb or no reverb at all if the delay is fine.

4) Cut the muddiness of the clean guitar.

That would be the first things I would try. gl

Thanks for the tips Pashalis!

Fritsthegirl: I completely agree. I posted mine feeling like it sounded pretty decent, when I heard Jimmy's though I was blown away. Also thanks for the compliments!

Hey man,
Glad you posted this. It's a real nice performance.
I listened to yours and then Jimmy's.

Jimmy has done what I did and maybe more (compression?).
I don't think I said to you before but it's worth saying now. Sometime when a LOT of bass or mids has to be cut it's easy to feel like you're going too far.

Jim (and I) cut out more bass and mids than I think you would; Maybe do your eqing then take a break. Come back and listen again.
Reference similar commercial vocals and see how yours sits by comparison.

(The chorus just kicked in). Those vocals sound fantastic dude. In truth I'd dial some of the mids back in on Jim's mix, but only for the chorus.

Thanks Steeno!

Jimmy was kind enough to walk me through what he did. Although I can't recreate it at least I understand his process so maybe I can do something similar on the next go. I think when I finish my room treatment and can step back from the mic some it might really help with the low end on the vocal track.

In the mean time I am going to start trying to lay down a guitar track and do a proper cover instead of karaoke and see how it comes out.
