Hi guys, I've been reading some threads about needing a mic preamp to record vocals with the PC, or have a soundcard with a built in preamp... is that a must? Are there some microphones that I can buy where I can record vocals with my PC with buying a micpre amp or a micpreamp equiped soundcard?

I also have another question. In terms of sound quality, which way would produce better results?

Thanks in advance guys.

Yes, you can buy many types of microphones and record into your PC without a preamp.

Which one will produce better results, ofcourse the one that requires you to spend more cash- the one with a preamp.

Yes... you will need pre-amp for your mic. You'll notice the huge differences between "cheap PC mic" (usually come swith your soundcard / multimedia kit) and the one which requires pre-amp to work. Generaly, you have three options to choose.

1. Stand alone Pre-amp.
2. Soundcard built in mic pre-amp
3. External mixer built in mic pre-amp

For the mic, make sure you have at least Shure SM58 or it's family.

Generaly, the best way to capture vocals is by using good Condenser mic which requires phantom power. But it's quite expensive compared to regular dynamic like SM58.
There's many good thread in Microphone forum for you to dig out :)
