Vocal recording issue

Hi guys,
I recently purchased a mic (shure sm58) and a mixer (behringer 1204 usb). I intend to record vocals over instumentals.

I have it all hooked up correctly to the computer with drivers and software installed. I can record vocals over an instrumental with no problems. However I would like to know how I am able to hear both my voice and music at the same time while recording.

If headphones are plugged into the mixer, I can only hear my voice, and if plugged into the computer (headphone jack) i can only hear the music.

How can I route the music through the mixer so I can hear both at the same time? And without re-recording the music (if that makes sense) I want the vocals seperate from the music.

If I check the box in audacity (prog im using to record) "software playthrough" there is a big delay in my voice.

Any help is much appreciated!

That's called latency and it is a result of using the computer soundcard as the playback device instead of the Behringer 1204 usb. You need to assign the devices correctly in the recording software settings.

Can you select the mixer as the output device in Reaper?

This mixer acts as an audio interface, typically an audio interface replaces the soundcard completly. Most people even disable their sound card or don't have one installed at all just to avoid any conflicts.

do you or anyone using audacity know which settings to change in order to do this?

Also how can it be done with the mixer when the only connection is by the usb cable? I mean can the instrumental signal be sent thru the usb cable and translated by the mixer as sound thru the headphones?

edit: I will try using Reaper now

any software should have a settings menu where you can select inputs and outputs.

you'd plug your speakers or headphones into the mixer (or both), and select usb mixer as output device.

A stereo signal can be sent to and from the computer at the same time through the USB cable.

alright, I've managed to get the music to play thru the mixer (now i can hear music and my voice at the same time)

only thing is, now the gain has to be turned right up (like maxed out) in order for me to hear my voice!

and it wont record into audacity either....

wat is going on!?

There should be some sort of software that came with your mixer to adjust volumes.
