vocal quality

hi, I have a question about vocals. When I let my friends hear my songs, they always say that the vocals are unclear and they can't understand the lyrics. I know it's not because of the mic because I used the same mic on my porta 03 and it sounded fine. Even if I boost the volume of the vocals to really stand out in the mix, it still doesn't work. I'm using a tascam 788. I'm planning to have my songs mixed in a studio. will this work if they add a little eq or compression? Check out my home page and listen to "All about you" or "You're a loser too" so you'll know what I mean. I didn't really care much for the mix coz I'm gonna have it mixed by a pro anyway. It's just a temporary mix. Any opinions are welcomed. thanks..
 
OK, now Travis, tell us what mic was used , and what was used for a preamp or mixer. Did you use any compression, reverb, EQ, or FX? Without any of that info, my best guess is you need a mic, or you need a preamp, or both. So whats the signal chain?-Richie
 
I used an M-audio audiobuddy preamp and a shure 10am dynamic mic. Here's my settings on the tascam:

reverb:
room type: room
pre delay: 15ms
reverb time: 1.0sec
diffusion: 100

dynamics:
threshhold: -16
attack: 0.1
ratio: 8.0:1
postgain: 12db

for the eq, I set gain to +12 at 6.0k. the Q was set to 4.
 
Well, I've only seen the specs on a 10aAM. It's not well known in the U.S. For starters, if you are outsourcing your mixing, turn off the compression, the EQ and the reverb. Let the mixing engineer do that. Just record a clean hot signal from rhe Audiobuddy, and see what that sounds like. Your voice sounds stomped on (overcompressed).-Richie
