How do I get that nice finished, polished vocal track with CEP or CW?? Im new to the whole mastering process and I need help.

Are you talking about "vocal polishing" in the mixing or mastering process?

Well, I guess it would be in the mastering stages. I mean, how far do you take the mixing process? Is it more than just finding the right levels and eq'ing everything just right? I listen to songs from pop artists and they all have that nice vocal..real clean and blended. When i record, it sounds like Im singing karaoke. Im not expecting perfection, but Im using the 58 and I think I should be able to get close.

If you are "singing" a 58 isn't your best choice. Get a condenser.
If you are "screaming" a 58 should do just fine.

As far as mastering a track, look into T-Racks 24. Great mastering software.

Yep, a large diaphram condenser is usually best.

I like Sound Forge 5.0, tried the T-Racks demo but couldn't warm up to it.

Vocal polishing? I gargle with Meguiar's cleaner-wax, it softly removes fine scratches, swirls and contaminants and creates lasting protection.

Your problem is that you are using a SM-58, and probably into a crappy preamp.

Your initial best bet to fix your vocals to make a jump to a decent entry level large diaphragm condensor. For starters, the Marshall V67G and the Studio Projects C1 seem to be popular around this board.

No amount of mastering is going to fix a signal that was originally recorded beyond repair.

i agree whole-heartedly that the vocal sound you are after comes from, everyone repeat after me, " A QUALITY SIGNAL CHAIN"...from the mic to the preamp to the cables to the recording medium.....

from there you may need a tad of compression...some nice reverb....maybe a little delay....minor EQ....there are no set rules....it takes listening to the track and seeing what it needs, bringout out the good qualities, masking the bad......

GOOD LUCK!

If it sounds like karaoke then you're still in the tracking/mixing stage. A good mix should stand very well on its own.
