So were doing a parody project for school. Were taking an instrumental version of a song and putting our own vocals on it. What would be the best way to mix the vocals with the instrumental track? We dont want the vocal tracks to sound out of place and like they shouldnt be there..i hope you know what i mean.

Are you taking a commercial track and removing the vocals?

Cause if it's a commercial track, it's gonna be really hard to make the vocals sit right, since the rest of the track has already been mixed, mastered, and likely compressed all to hell and back.
I dunno, slap some reverb on there and hope for the best?

It's not going to sound/sit in the mix like the original vocals - just ain't gonna happen.

But you're not trying to sell it, so just futz with it until it sounds right.

Its a commercial track but the vocals are already off of it. Its an instrumental version of the song

I see what chu guys are trying do... i done alotta recordings with ppl who use industry instrumentals.

first it starts with tracking the vocals without clippin...but make sure you getting a good signal level not to skinny waveform.Enuff volume that you can hear the words.

once you tracked all the vocals start with compression, then eq,reverb last in the signal chain.

good compressor settings:

threshold -10

ratio 3.1

fast attack

good release time 40 to 50ms

bring the gain up till the vocals are sitting on top of the instrumental.

next is eq

it all depends on the voice is it deep or soft voice.

deep voices- cut the freq around 150 -10dbs

soft voice-cut the freq around 100 and -8dbs is enuff dont take too much body away from this vocal by cuttin too much.

next is reverb not too much...just enuff that you can barely hear it.

Try this!!! and let me know how that worked out
