vocal mixing chain?

What do you guys use as your signal chain for mixing vocals? I am working on mostly metal bands recordings. Everyone seems to have different ways of doing things, I am currently working with a death metal vocalist and it is kind of challenging to get the results that I am wanting, ala the black dahlia murder, the acacia strain, even some influences of say as i lay dying. What do you guys suggest to get this figured out.

Well, what ever works. Start with a dynamic mic for sure, but once its in the box, eq it to taste and comp it. Then I would suggest playing with sending it to an aux track. Really hit with compression and a little distortion. Blend the two tracks to taste.

I dig condenser mics on this type of vocal sometimes, especially for the low guttural stuff where the singer isn't all that loud. The top end that the condenser gets really helps put "spit on the lips" of the vocalist, which sounds good & angry. EQ wise, adding some top end (sometimes a lot!), say 10-12KHz has a similar effect, especially if you tracked with a dynamic mic that starts to taper off in that area. Find some of the more pronounced midrange frequencies (750hz?) and notch them down a touch to take some of the "reality" of your dude's voice out of it which should help it to sound less like real life and more like the brutal-dude you seek. Take away too much and it'll get lost in the wall o' chunk.
