hey guys.... i would like someone to listen to a couple of my tunes, to see what im doing wrong with the vox... all the instruments sound fine, and they sit in the mix great, but the vox just have that infamous "DIY" feel to it lol...they just dont sound natural if you know what i mean...

i would give you my myspace link, but the low quality streaming would probably make it hard to get a grasp of wheter or not its a mixing issue, or just the shitty streaming... but here it is anyway lol...

my myspace music page

the first 2 songs are really the only ones i would like to get feedback on... the other 2 were recorded on SUPER crappy equipment, so i know theres no helpin those...

if anyone could tell me how i could upload, lets say, the WAV files somewhere, so you could hear it without streaming, that would be great.... thanks

If you post in the 'MP3 Mixing Clinic' Forum, you will probably get a lot more people to listen to your work.

What equipment are you using and where did you track the vocals?

i used an akg c2000b condenser (small diaphragm)... the only quality mic i have, i know a large diaphragm would be better for vox, but thats all i have..so work with me here!! lol :D

i run that into an alesis multimix 16 usb mixer, then into my computer.. factory soundcard BLAH...

i tracked the vocals in the same place i did everything else... i know, i know, not a good thing to do, but its really all i can do as of now... i mean, i keep a quiet room, so there is very very minimal background noise, aside from a little bit of headphone bleed....nothing substantial though.... but i just hate that crappy unprofessional sound quality that the vocals have.... i know im not gonna get them to have a "full" professional sound, but i would imagine i could get somethin better out of em than what i got...considering everything else turned out fine

:D Yo W15--one before 16:]

You might try running the vocal through several dynamic compression presets, if you have them, and listen to the results--louder/softer/etc.

My 2816 SIAB has a bunch of these and I've been experimenting with applying some to individual tracks and the results have been very interesting as to the amount of delay, cut-off, threshold, etc.

Of course, doing this takes time. Yesterday I spent 4 hours to do one 5 minute instrumental--but, time and trial is how you get better vocals and solo leads, as well as blending in all of the tracks to your ears' satisfaction.

Green Hornet  :D :)

Vocals, without an processing, have a "dry" sound. They don't sound like the pro stuff that way. I almost always add some kind of delay, or reverb to make vocals.

Nick98338,

What kind of settings do you use for reverb on the vox?

actually i dont remember offhand... i dont know how to use sends/busses etc... so i just apply the same effect to each "box"...

(lets say during a verse, i messed up halfway, and had to start from where i left off... i would have 2 "boxes" of vocals...thats what i mean by "box"... sorry, dont know the proper terms..)

but i have the waves diamond bundle...gift from a friend, i DEFINITELY didnt buy it myself haha..

i think on this one i used a splash of rverb, and i used one of the compression presets...

i know its never going to have professional quality, but i know i can at least get a better sound out of it.. i think im doing something wrong for the vox to sound that bad (quality wise)

I use the "Classic" reverb VST plugin from KJAERHUS Audio. For lead vocal, I usually start with the preset named "Big & Bright", then tweak those settings. For background vocals I usually start with the preset named "Room" and tweak from there.

That's the same VST I use. Works very well. I just didn't know if there were some special settings you use regularly.
