I use a SM 57 for vocals right now and it sounds good, but I was wondering if there would be a major difference if I bought a better quality one. I'm assuming so, but I can get just as good a sound as some of the more expensive mics my friend uses. And if so, which Mic would be best for say $300 at the most? these are for vocals now. :) thanks

Use the search function and the Mic Faq - www.hr-faq.org - to get some ideas, then come back and tell us what you're thinking and what your voice sounds like. :)

"Major" difference is questionable according to what you're doing already with the SM57. The 57 can be a great, and terrible choice for vocals.

Last night, we were working on some acoustic guitar. (Yeah, I know this post isn't beginning to talk about vocal mics.) We put an Avenson STO-2. Oh my god, it was a thing of beauty on acoustic. We put up an Audio-Technica AT4047. It wasn't as startling but it sat well in the mix. Both quality mics. But, each put across different visions of my koa back and sides acoustic guitar.

Different mics give you different choices. They give you different pictures of a sound. I'm not a big SM57 fan. Fletcher wrote a great piece on the SM57... http://www.mojopie.com/sm57.html

One mic that grows on us (us = me and the guys I work with) continually is the AT4040. It's rarely the very best mic for anything but it consistently translates music again and again rather than merely passing a sound or even worse passing a signal. And, it meets your cost guideline.

check out the shure sm7b. its right in your price range.

I just won an sm7b on ebay for $200... hopefully it isn't too good to be true.
