What is the cheapest microphone that is considered decent enough to do vocals on a semi pro level?

That's a loaded question but to get ya started, look at maybe the V67G, the SP B1 or the SM58. All around 100 USD with decent results...
my2c......

cheapest i can think of would be the homemade condensor omni mic that is mentioned in some threads here. i guess it would depend on your room though and the type of sound you're after. i think in the right hands, good results could be had.

Thanks guys. I think I'm gonna go with the AKG Perception 200. Seems to be the best for that buck. and thats the most I can spend.
That's the one I'm planning on getting to.

One thing to keep in mind is that, regardless of the price level, some mics are good on a particular voice, and some are just wrong. It can be a $1000 mic, and still be wrong for your voice, and a $100 mic might sound better. So, if at all possible, try to either audition some mics and find out what sounds good on your voice in your price range, or at least do a lot of reading through the various budget mic threads and reviews, and try to make an educated guess on which mic to get, based on what others have said about that mic's characteristics. For instance, some mics are hyped in the upper mids, and won't sit well with a high resonant voice, while some mics are "warm" or "dark", and end up just muddy or dull on a deeper, less resonant voice.

Good luck.

Good Advice!

FYI, I am selling my CAD M9 tube mic for $225+shipping and my SE2200A FET for $225+shipping.
Both would be much nicer than the AKG.
Both include aluminum case and shockmount plus CAD M9 comes with 30 foot 7 pin cable and power unit.

I just got the akg perception 200, and it's great for MY voice! I tried the Rode NT1 and an AKG c2000 as well in the store. The 2000 was way too bright, and the NT1 was a little dark. The Perception 200 has the bass rolloff and -10db switch, and was a good mix of full tone yet open clear highs. I overpaid 20 bucks but had the satisfaction of trying out the mic before buying (plus it came with a case/shockmount) with the cable and mixer (yamaha mg8/2fx) that I was going to use. I've very happy with the setup. My voice is not clear as a bell, and i don't have a very impressive range. I think that the perception may sound bright to someone with an already bright voice, but I believe it would be super for the typical male singer. Don't look for it to help with sibilance though...
