Double your normal distance from the mic, and boost the gain about 3 dB (i.e., if your normal distance is 6" from the mic, try standing about 12" away instead).

Remove any windscreens and pop filters.

Lemme know if that helps.

Response by Alan:

Good option Harvey, but 3dB also doubles the noise... That might be a problem on Cello, but not vocals.

Positioning the mic further away will pick up more room sound, which could also be a problem for those of us who don't have a good room.

It sounds like he's not having the problem with his cello (miked from about 3 feet away), but with his vocals (miked about 8 inches away, thru a pop filter). My suggestion was a way to decrease the bottom end (by reducing the proximity effect through added distance), and pick up a little more top end (by eliminating the filter).

I've said it many times before: "Mic placement is often more important than mic choice."

But mainly, he should try it because it'll cost him nothing but a little time.

And if it works, he's learned something of value.

....and if it doesn't work, he's still learned something of value.

I have.

kid klash, yea I agree. However, the point I'm making is... the SP B1 is not flat or neutral and I don't think it's right to lead someone into believing the B1 is a flat mic when it's not. Peace :)

Dr.Grace, well what happened when you tried what Harvey said?

My dad is thinking about ordering a B1... I'm going to have to borrow it from him for awhile... We'll see how flat it is to my Milab VIP-50 or how neutral it is to my C3... He's borrowing my C3 right now though...

Do I care if it's flat or neutral or not, no, but it'll be nice to know... But what I REALLY want to do is to put it on a snare or tom and seewhat happpens... Then, give it a few whacks with a drum stick as Alan suggested... :D
