Vocal compression before tape?

I know that you should get the highest possible sound to tape without distorting (adats) so when i do the vocal track the soft and loud parts are so far apart its crazy. How much compression should i use going to tape or should it be done soley after tape during the mixdown?

is a compression unit also a limiter once you compress it to a certain point?

Thanks!

There is no substitute for proper mic technique (pulling back when you are singing loud and getting closer for the quiet parts) but it is perfectly fine to compress on the way in. Just make sure you don't go overboard with it because you can't take it away. 4/1 is about as far as you want to go (less is better) and don't try to be in it all the time.
One thing you might want to try is tracking the loud and the quiet parts separately so you can set the levels for each
