I have a question for those using the VM 3100Pro and Logic RPC. 1st is it possible to use any of the stereo inputs and/or digital inputs for recording with RPC? I have found that in both the VM3100 template in Logic and the new song template in Logic the only options for recording are channels 1 - 8. How can I assign Logic to record using the stereo/digital inputs?

Also I have found that in the VM3100 template the midi start/stop function doesn't work. I only get midi transport control when using the new song template. Anyone have any insight here?

I would much appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Stray

vm31

to record from inputs 9-10 and 11-12, you need to route these inputs to a certain channel,
press shift+channel and you´ll see some options for that channel, do that in channel 1 and set it to use input 9 instead of 1, then do the same on channel 2 setting it to channel 10, then in logic you`ll be able to record inputs 9-10 in channels 1 and 2. and dont forget to pan channel 1 hard left and channel 2 hard right or it will be converted to mono.

refering to that midi problem i never had it, check on MIDI options, i think you´re not oppening the vm31 template, just a new file, i foun the real vm31 template on the cd, it didt installed it automatically, so i had to copy it to my HD and set it to ber read only, and when it asks it will never be ereased, also, put it inside logic´s directory and rename it to "autoload" that way it will be loaded automatically when you create a new file, personally i prefer cakewalks sonar, i created my own template for it, and it works perfectly, what i didit liked of logic is that it only gave me one undo,

i think that should work, the manual isn`t very useful, so you need to be playing with it, if i can help you in something else just ask me.

Thanks for the info:

Thanks for the info Swap it really is useful. I tried the routing you mentioned and it works great, no more switching cables all over the place. Yes!!!

In reference to the VM3100 template, I did install from the CD to my harddrive, as a matter of fact I have a couple of them in different locations in case I overwrite one (good idea with the read only though, I'll do that). Still midi transport doesn't work with the template. If I go to new song in Logic then it works beautiful, but then I only have 8 tracks of recording. What I've been doing is just recording 8 at a time and then importing those tracks into the VM3100 template in Logic. This is really a shitty way of doing it though. I went through midi options and can't figure out what settings I have wrong. I've compared the settings for new song with the VM3100 template and they seem to be identical.

If anyone knows about this situation and can offer some advise I would sincerely appreciate it. Thanks.

Thanks Tex:

Thanks for the reply Tex, but I have tried that to no avail. I'm wondering if this is a malfuntion of the mixer or the software or a combination of both. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

How do you mean 'to no avail'?

Did it say it loaded the preset and it still didnt work right?

Or did the preset not load at all?

It loaded:

Tex, the Logic configuration loads, but still doesn't allow for transport control in the VM3100 template. I'm thinking this is a malfunction of some sort. I'm going to contact Roland today, I'll post he outcome.

Good luck with Roland...

You said earlier that it worked on new songs?

I have a feeling there is one of those little details that we are missing here. Do you have any other midi cards or sound cards installed? They might be hijacking the midi signal. You are not using the midi port on the VM are you? The VM transmits midi through the RPC cable and card. Just making sure we covered all the bases.

If it works in one situation we can probably make it work for the others. Let me know if you need more help.

When in doubt, reinstall the software and drivers and start from scratch.

Eureka!!!

Tex, I think you may have identified my problem. I do have another soundcard installed, which may be causing the problem here. I also am using the MIDI out on the VM3100 to my main workstation/sequencer, are you asking that because I'm not supposed to? BTW when I said new song, I meant the new song template in Logic not a new song I created.

I tried calling Roland, but I got sent through a IVR script that got me nowhere and after 20 minutes I just hung-up. I'm going to try disabling my other soundcard and see if that helps, I think I'll also reinstall the drivers and software.

Thanks again for the advice Tex.

For using MIDI on the VM, DO NOT hook up midi cables from the VM to your Computer.

The VM transmits MIDI thru the RPC cable. Use the Roland as your midi interface and not as another controller. That may solve the problem.

I used to do everything MIDI but right now I am only doing audio tracks and have no midi gear hooked up. The transport controls work fine for me with the Logic Preset loaded on the VM and the VM preset loaded in LOGIC.

You may want to pull out your other cards and get the VM and RPC working fine before you add the other stuff. I couldnt get 2 cards to work until the RPC was happy by itself then I added the SoundBlaster and everything works fine.

Good Luck.

I read you post again. Hooking up the VM out to your Workstation should be okay.

Like I said earlier though, just take out the sound card and unhook the Workstation. Then add them one by one. Its a lot easier to troubleshoot one thing at a time.

That was it:

Tex, I uninstalled and removed everything then just reinstalled Logic and the RPC card, everything is working fine now. I don't really need the other soundcard so I'm leaving that out for now, I needed a slot for another SCSI card anyway. I really appreciate your time and advice, you certainly got things straightened out for me. Thanks.

Glad I could help. Good luck with the VM. The routing can be a bitch.

When you are ready for mixdown you can assign the 7-8 bus to be the same as the Master outs. That way you can record the 7-8 inputs on your multi and it will have all the tracks that you run and process thru the VM.
