I'm thinking of doing some solo stuff, and I can't play guitar/bass for crap. I was wondering if you guys know of any really nice guitar/bass simulators that I can program that don't sound like Mr. Roboto is playing them. I'm getting DKFHS for the drum aspect (really nice trigger sounds =)), so I'd like to finish it off with a nice guitar/bass combo to write material with.... Any ideas? Thanks guys,

Well, if you go sim, you'll never get a realistic pick attack. Could be wrong though.

You should just get some guitar lessons.

I agree. They even have free lessons on the internet. Guitar isn't as hard to play as everyone makes out. It's a pice of piss and you can learn to play a few cchord competently within a few weeks if you practice hard. I've never had a lesson in my life and I would consider myself to be a reasonably good player. And it's way more fun than programming. and you can probably get a reasonable starter guitar with a starter amp forcheaper than any guitar programming software thats actually any good.

However, if you do want to go the programming route, maybe check out some soundfonts. You may have to spend a whole evening searching, but there is apparently some good stuff out there. So I've heard...I mean I haven't exactly gone looking for guitar sondfonts for obvious reasons.

If you goto www.kvraudio.com, and do some searches on their forums, and take some notes of some of the soundfonts they are reccommending. Then head over to www.sf2midi.com and download them.

If you are going to go the soundfont route, you'll want to download SFZ, which is a damn good soundfont player, and can be used like any VST instrument. Then load the soundfont into it, and your on your way. :)

All this stuff is free BTW :)

I actually play classical guitar decently, but unfortunately my pick-handling skills are very poor. Any time I spend on guitar is time I'm not spending developing another skill...not to mention some stuff I plan on doing is going to be more complicated than a novice can accomplish. There's NOTHING out there? Dang, I figured if they could get a realistic drum sim they could at least have a decent guitar/bass sim... Maybe I'm just behind the times...

Like I say, try the soundfonts. you just might have to spend a few hours seaching.

Another way would be to collaborate with another guitarist on this board maybe.

Yeah, this is when people do things like start bands.

:D

I'd suggest conning one of us to play the part for you. I doubt you'd get a decent sound out of a sim anyway. Sound fonts would be the way to go though, if you still want to do it that way.

What part of S-O-L-O escapes you???

:rolleyes::cool::D

The part where you said "I can't play guitar or bass for crap", specifically.

Listen, I'm not knocking using sampled or virtual instruments....I was just stating the obvious. Most people would look for somebody else to fill those shoes. The idea of a virtual guitar just makes me cringe.

Best of luck, smartass.

Ain't gonna happen for guitar. Every note a guitarist plays is at least slightly different, and there are so many variables in play that a sim is just not going to cut it. Learning to play your instrument is Step One in making music. Failing that, getting someone who can play to help you out is your best alternative.

Bass is a little easier to sim because sim-sounding bass is a bit more acceptable to the listener. A friend of mine used to have a MIDI device called a Blue Box that did pretty well.

John Mayer is a solo artist, and yet he's got people filling in other instruments.

He also has $$$ to pay studio musicians to play his parts... Last time I checked, no $$$ or major label to back me.....:p

Same could be said for you bro....

I think that much of the attitude you are encountering is due to the fact that you seem to be saying that you want to make music without going to all the trouble of learning to play. Those of us who have spent many years working on our skills are not very sympathetic.

I've heard a pretty convincing synth electric guitar. But it was chords and not single-note picking stuff. It was kind of a heavy metal sounding guitar, and I have to say it sounded pretty good for what it was. I believe that he was using a Kurzweil keyboard/sampler. Unfortunately the fellow has taken down the song I was going to link to.

My point was that you can be a solo artist and still have other people take on the task of the other instruments.

Just find some friends that play what you need.

alright. you kids cut that shit out. =P

if you really want guitar in your music, your gonna have to do what i did...just buckle down and learn it. if you want it to sound good anyway.

i wanted violin in some of my music. sure i could have used midi or a keyboard. well, i suck at keyboards so i'd have to use midi. to make it sound real that just wasn't an option. so...i bought a violin and took the time to learn it well enough to get what i wanted out of it.

that's just music man. sometimes we have to suffer for our craft. but i can promise you...my wife suffered more. =]
