Vinyl Sales Keep Rising

It'd be nice to see some of the old time record stores come back in. We used to have some really cool shops that dealt primarily in LP distribution, but the last of the major chains went belly up some years ago. We have maybe one, or two at the most, used LP dealers here in my city; but I don't know of any still in existence that retail the new vinyl releases. Maybe they'll start back up if they see there's a market.

Question is, where does one buy the quality of record player with the diamond tip needles anymore? I used to have one, a really nice one, but got rid of it whenever I could no longer buy new vinyl. Maybe I should have kept it.

As turntable and LP sales rise, we should expect to see a lot of suburban youths having their minds blown.

Why spend $18 on a new CD by some awful rap-metal band when you can spend $4 on a used Black Sabbath or Hendrix record?

I know there are many reasons, so...edledoctor.com/"]http://www.needledoctor.com/

It's an overwhelming array of new record players, needles and such, anything from budget to really, really expensive.:D

...but, for a format that supposedly "died" long ago, it supports a large coverage of hardware, which is really cool.

The one thing that I always look out for is that any current LP production's source is from analogue and not, God forbid, digital. What's the point in that?

Check these out:

Hello Ani,

Craigslist is really your best bet. Just search, call, and go pick it up! No shipping problems or cost. It appears that most people are just listening thru earphones these days. Few people live in a way that allows them to enjoy the old, powerful, component systems. So they now sell at giveaway prices.

A VERY HIGH QUALITY 60's, 70's, or 80's complete system (tuner, 100W amp. speakers, etc.) can usually be found for less than $100.00 complete with all components. Audiophile quality from $300 to $800. Just keep watching the list, regularly.

Today, I saw one of the most beautiful turntables i can remember sell for $125 in Seattle.

Good hunting,
Rich Smith

This is true. There are still so much great stuff that I haven't heard myself yet I'll never get through it all . A dollar a pop at the Salvation Army and sometimes mint. I need to get a better turntable at some point.

I'm ONLY buying vinyl from now on. Went through a CD phase, but I missed the involvement of having to turn the record, put it back in its sleeve, etc every 25mins, it makes it more of an involved experience. You cant just go off and do somthing else for ages, therefore not really listening to the music anyway.

I like having to find space to store it all, I like that you get a big picture on the sleeve, you can read the lyrics without having to squint or fold out a 12 page booklet.

the other thing about record shops, was that before it all went "global brand" hmv-virgin etc, if you bought a LP in a shop, the guys would usually recommend another album, therefore turning you onto to some good music you would otherwise not have listened to. I know know they do the "see what others have bought" on amazon etc, but it just seems less personal, and essentially not as good.:)

Anybody here have any personal experience with a laser phonograph?

I know the price is crazy ($10k-$14k), but just wanted to know anyone's opinion, in case I hit the lottery or something.

A good source for often gently used records is garage sales or estate sales. I recently visited a house here that had a sign out front saying "Tag Sale". I wasn't in the market for any "tags", on sale or not, but I thought I would stop in to see if they were selling things other than "tags". It turned out that they weren't selling tags, but that nearly everything in the house had a price "tag" on it, everything that is except that big stack of records in the corner of the living room. I wandered over to check them out and found that they were mostly "class"ical stuff, and, since I have no class, I wasn't familiar with most of it. There were a few things I thought might be interesting, including a bunch of old New Orleans blues, jazz and gospel records. Anyway, I wandered over to the person running the sale and said I would take the whole lot of records for $20. The person running the sale wasn't at all insulted and said to take them away. I had to make two trips in the car (well, my car does look like it's lived in) to get them all home. I did an inventory and it turned out that there were 250 records. I found this one record by this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Robinson_(trombonist) http://www.emusic.com/album/Jim-Rob...prituals-And-Blues-MP3-Download/10605339.html I looked at the record and there was scribbling all over the back. I figured the owner's kids had gotten hold of it and messed it up, BUT, when I looked a bit closer I realized they were not scribbles, but autographs. So, for that $20 I got 250 records plus a collection of autographs of long deceased New Orleans Jazz musicians.

Autographs include:

Heard of it, but never seen it. I can't imagine how it tracks a record though. The laser reads the hills and valleys of the grooves, and, I suspect, could do a good job of it so long as it tracks properly. I wonder what it would do to pops and clicks.
