Recently met a guy with a most impressive and excesive collection of old revox's the 1/2 inch stereo decks and 8 track otari's on 1 inch tape in great shape. He wants to sell them to me, but I don't know how much these are going for, to make him an offer. You guys have any ideas? He also has some old 4 track scully decks, anyone ever hear of that brand? The stuff is all in tip top shape.

Hey Aloha,

I probably shouldn't have posted because I have no experience with Revox, Otari or Scully decks, but 8 tracks on one inch and in great shape was enough to raise my eyebrows and compell me to express interest...

(Can't wait to hear from those in the know about that deck... I wonder if parts are still available?)

Why does this guy want to sell such wonderful and fully professional equipment?

Has he given up on recording?

Has he gone digital?

Did he loose his job?

What's the deal?

A 1/2 inch, 1/2 track recorder from Revox doesn't make sense to me because Revox was the consumer division of Studer and to the best of my knowledge, Revox never made anything beyond 1/4 inch.

If it is a Studer and not a Revox that unit would have sold for over 10k new.

How old is it?

What is the model number?

How many hours are on the heads?

Are they the original heads?

Have the heads been re-lapped?

As for the Otari, one inch, eight track, that would have to be a fairly old machine and an expensive one too, when it was new.

Same questions as above before a realistic used price could be established.

As for Scully;

Scully was a very high end professional tape recorder manufacturer and had success in the recording and film industry into the late 70's.

They are not around any more so parts might be a real problem but, they were built better then tanks and if working and in good shape, a four track from them should be worth at least a good few hundred bucks if not more, depending on the model and condition.

Let's see some pictures of these so we can have a better idea of what treasures you have found!

Cheers! :)

You honestly wouldn't believe what this guy has in his house. I have never seen a collection like that anywhere not even on the net. I don't know where to begin to explain what he had. He has so much stuff, I think it's the largest stockpile in Canada. He's trying to get rid of some of it to fund construction of his personal studio. I don't know if he'd like the idea of me coming over and taking pictures of what he has. He seems like a real paranoid kind of guy. I guess I would be too if I had all that stuff in my house. I am going back to take a closer look at the otari, maybe I can snap at least a few pictures. So you say studer made revox eh? I'll look into that as well.
