Can someone who uses the 2480 help me out? I am comparing the AW4416 to the VS-2480. The only question I have at this point is the VGA capabilities.

I have a separate ISO booth for vocals. If I run a Mouse and Monitor in there, will I be able to control recording? Can I start and stop the recorder etc???

Thanks for your help guys....

Hi there.

I've got a VS2480 too.

I've only a hooked a VGA monitor up to it once - but I found that the VGA display is fantastic!

By that I mean - you can do *so* much stuff from the VGA display - it makes navigating the thing so much easier, and clearer.

When you use the a VGA monitor with the 2480 - you can select whether the mouse uses the built in LCD screen or the external VGA display as a target. So, with a mouse & monitor, you can do a lot of operations remotely.

I'm about 99% sure you can stop and start the recorder using the mouse on the VGA display externally - so you should be able to do what you say - control recording etc. from your booth. In fact, I've been thinking of doing the same thing!

I'll check it out tonight, and get back to you on that one, but like I say, I'm 99% sure you can do exactly what you want to.

As regards the 2480 vs AW4416 issue - having used the AW4416 quite a lot too - I much prefer the VS2480 - and I would recommend it over the AW4416, if you're willing to fork out for it.

Thanks so much....

Anyone know the difference in the 2480 and the 2480 CD other than the CDR? Are the effects the same? I thought I read somewhere that they wer not the same.

No problem :)

I thought that the CDR/W drive was the only difference. In fact I'm pretty sure it's the only difference - as both models have the same manual/documentation. I've got the VS2480-CD myself - and the manual that comes with it is for the VS2480 - not the VS2480-CD specifically. There are bits of it that say they refer specifically to the VS2480-CD - but only the bits related to the CD burner.

The VS2480CD is just a VS2480 with CD drive. Everything else ought to be the same.

At any rate - they both use the same FX board - the VS28F I think it's called.

Ok, I just checked the monitor issue - yes, you can play/record/navigate with the monitor & mouse. You can do a whole heck of a lot actually - the thing is, the monitor shows much more information on one screen than the built in LCD does.

No problem :)

If you're undecided on the VS2480 vs AW4416 issue - you might like to take a look at this - it's a thread over at TalkBass.com in which I did a review of the VS2480 and compared it to the AW4416.

Excellent review.....

Assuming I can get the VS within $500 of the AW, You would go with the VS right? I love the Idea of the VGA screen.

Yes I'd definitely go with the VS (and indeed, I did!).

Personally, I would say it's worth saving the extra money.

Not a matter of saving.... I bid on an AW on Ebay, and I see that the VS are going for around $400 - $500 more. Just wondering if it will be worth the hassle of retracting my bid and dealing with the consequences.....

Ah I see.

I don't know what the consequences are of retracting your bid - but if you've got the money, I'd say do what you gotta do to get the VS2480 :)

That is, if you're confident it's the one you want. I tried to be balanced in my review - but I'm sure there are AW4416 owners here who could expound the virtues of the AW4416 over the VS2480.

All I can say is that, having had quite a bit of use out of an AW4416 (I borrowed it), and now having got I VS2480, I've found the VS2480 to be very preferable.

I think one of the major pluses for me is the VGA. I've been doing this since the Fostex x-15 in 1985. I'm sick of these tiny screens. Also, I'd be able to run a cheap LCD monitor into the ISO room with the mouse and be able to record from there when I do vocals and drums....

Thanks for the advice...

Yup, the monitor is a great thing. So helpful!

Well, good luck - and post an update when you get the VS2480 :)
