VF16 vs. VF160

Who can tell me the differences between these two models? From what I can understand, the VF160 has a built-in CDRW drive. Does it also have a larger HDD? What other options is the VF16 NOT capable of doing in which the VF160 can do.

Thanks in advance

Only difference is built in CDRW in the VF 160.......as far as hardrives go,you can pop them in and out with ease if they are on the confirmed media list.I think the VF 160 comes with a 20 gig drive.MY VF 16 came with a 10 gig.

They don't sell the VF 16 anymore so I'm assuming you are looking to buy used?If you do buy used be prepared to change the hardrive out.The life of the hardrive in these things is anywhere from 2-4 years.I had to change my first one out at the 2 year mark in my VF 16.

I would go with the VF 160 just for the CDRW.You really need it for backing up files and transferring wavs into your PC.(If you do any type of PC editing).Otherwise you'll be stuck with trying to find zip drives to back up your work on with the VF 16 or you can buy a Plextor Burner for around 200 bucks to hook up to the VF 16.........that doesn't make sense to me.I"ve gone that route and I have a nice set up now with the plextor and all but if the VF 160 was available when I was shopping for a recorder I would have bought it for the built Burner alone.

so basically, the actual unit is exactly the same? as in specs of what it can do? i can always get a CDR for it later on down the road. 8 simul tracks are good, and i can always connect to my PC for mastering. is that the real deal? the actual unit was renamed from VF16 to VF160 because of the CDRW drive? if there are ANY options what-so-ever that are cripped on the VF16 compared to the VF160, I would like to know about these. In fact, the first thing I plan to do is to upgrade the HDD of whichever unit I buy, to the largest available on the machine. Of course I am currently looking at eBay prices and stuff. I can always get a Plextor drive for a VF16 later down the road, as I am seeing a $200 trend difference in price around eBay between the two units.

Yes they are the same exact unit except for the CD-RW.

You mentioned hooking it up to your PC for mastering. The only way to hook either of them up to a PC(and remain in the digital realm) is through then SPDIF output. You cannot hook them up to a PC using the SCSI port. You can always go out of the analog outs on the machine but that defeats the whole purpose of digital recording and the capablities of the machine.

I'll be honest with you. Most people dont even mix onthe VF 16/160 because of it's low end EQ limitations.400 Hz is as low as the EQ goes on the VF 16/160.Most people(including myself) only use the machine to track with and then import the 16 to 24 individual track wav files into the PC via CD for Mixing.

Yeah, I've used SONAR to do that before with a different system that did not belong to me. So as long as both of these units are mechanically and featurewise identical i can deal with getting a CDRW for it later should i choose to get the VF16, which leads me to my next question:

Does the VF16 model allow the addition of an internal CDRW drive? or must you use external SCSI only?

External only and the Plextor burners are the only SCSI burners that I know of that will work with the VF 16.You will need to update the VF-16's software to Version 3.13 to use the new plextors.

Here's a FAQ page that may answer some other questions you have.

thanks a million

Hey man, thanks a lot for clearing up the mystery between the VF16 and VF160 for me. It would have really sucked to blindly buy the VF16 to find out that the VF160's effects processor was totally re-engineered or something. I'll check those links out and read all the FAQs I can find on it. Again, thanks, and have a good one.

Hey man,no problem. If you have any more questions just drop them in here or over at the vf16 bbs.If I don't know the answer somebody else will.Hang around and check out the rest of this BBS.There's a lot of great info here and plenty of knowledgeable people to field any type of recording question. You just have to wade through the trolls every now and then.Take it easy.
