When I power on the screen just goes blank with no info about the drive status. Is this an indication that my drive is dead?

VF 16 Problems

Hey, I had the same thing happen on June 7 of this year! It's your Hard Drive!

They are easy to replace. The manual covers it pretty well, see page 22, "Replacing The Hard Disc". It takes a conventional "IDE" unit that you
can buy at any Computer Sales and Service Center. I got a 40 gig unit at 'Digilink Computers" for just $80.00. Boy, was I surprised, I thought I'd have to buy a SCIZZI port unit like my old Akai DR8, that was over $500. and only 4 gig's. The technology sure has improved for us in a big hurry.

Just turn the unit upside down on a soft surface (bed quilt on your kitchen table top) and remove the 4 philips head screws, unplug the old one, plug in the new one and replace the cover and screws, it's really that simple and fast. Then, you have to format/initialize your new disc, that's covered in manual too.
Hope I was some help to you.
Tony.

Yes, that does sound very simple. But it freaks me out that the fostex unit has such a crappy hard drive  . Guess I will be backing up all my song today. I hope this isn't a problem with the VF160, but I bet it isn't. fostex probably bought all the cheap harddrives they could and will slap them in all their gear for years to come.

Peace, Jim

Unfortunately...hard drives go. I never backed up anything until I fried my first hard drive!!! I feel your pain.

Don't think it's a particular problem with these machines. Hard disks can go anytime, or they can last for years with no problems. I've had mine for 2 years since new now, and counting. But because of my experiences in the IT industry i know what disks are like and always take a backup of each song I'm working on. Each time you turn off your hard disk it might not ever come back up again, it's like playing roullette with all your songs as the stake.

Take backups, check your backups actualy restore proeprly (that's ANOTHER story!).
