VF 80 and mic pre

I have a VF80 and an Art Tube MP, when I use only the internal
pre's on the VF80 I realy have to crank up the gain to get even close to a decent signal. When I use the Tube should I be turning
up the internal pre or leaving it at 0 ? Also if anyone uses the Tube, do they use the pre-sets, or do they just set it flat and track that way?
Any and all advice welcome.

start with the vf80 gain on 0 and turn up if you have to

Agree totally with the above post... I don't own an ART Tube, but I am biased toward recording flat -- if by that you mean with little or no eq. It's almosy always easier to "tweak" a "dry" track than it is to have to "untweak" a "wet" one. But that's just one view, and there may be times when it doesn't hold up. For instance, on the VF80, it's practically impossible to add compression to only one track, unless this is done during recording by using an external processor... De-essing might be another area where it's a good thing to tweak the signal before it goes into the machine.
