I've been a vegas user since the days of the original Beta. At the time I saw it as an exciting, innovative leap into native audio software( I was still firmly entrenched in the world of 2" tape and an SSL G series). Its speed, WELL thought out GUI and editing philosophy were gret enough to get past some of its obvious problems. Also I figured the problems were only temporary and that soon they would be fixed as needed. I was wrong

Over the years it has become painfully obvious to me that software developers ( not only sonic foundry) for the most part have never set foot in a recording studio. They have never worked with an irate client over their shoulder. They have never seen how difficult it is to implement regular every day real world functions, using these software systems. In fact, they dont even understand, nor have they seen these real world functions we need to carry out. Their ignorance is forgiveable, in fact, I think its our duties as customers to point out real world issues we have so that programmers can do what they do best: program.

heres an ancient and somewhat overenergetic and generally whacky post by me on the subject of what I considered missing features http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=60588

some of these have come to pass, and others not. I certainly dont want to sound like " my way or the highway" and most of the things I worry about I THINK are concerns of all.

There ARE a couple of douchebags both at the Sonic Foundry Vegas forum and also the secret beta forums that try their hardest to keep important features from seeing the light of day. I fear that SF may listen to them as the easiest thing to do is to do nothing. I REALLY hope that we users can all speak up about some of the more obvious and crippling shortcomings in Vegas.
Some of the forum douchebags always attack credibility or some other stupid thing to sidetrack the actual issues.

First of all I worry about input monitoring:

Traditional customers LIKE auto input!

In vegas there is no way to route an input to vegas, then back out to a hardware mixer channel and still be able to punch on that channel.
In the MME system that vegas uses, anytime a track is armed, disc playback for that hardware I/O is muted, while the input may or may not be sent to the output.

the forum douchebags have many many workarounds. FINE if it works for them fine but WHY deny the rest of us to work in the way we want??? Cant we all just get along ?

Before vegas 3 there was extensive discussion about this and seems the forum douchebags won out
Vegas 4 may have ASIO, so PLEASE lets all ask that they do this right and give us a choice at REAL tape style auto input

Second and related, I know I love to play my guitar thru amplitube in cubendo. Without a sensible input output scheme this will be impossible

third VST fx....yeah some work with dx to vst adapters, but how long now have we had to sit and wait while cubendo customers could run UA DSP cards and others? Why deny customers half of the fx market??? Any effect I can patch into an SSL I can also patch into a Neve, why should software be any different? is it arrogance? whatever it is its hurting US

fourth, preservation of audio integrity...I would love for someone from SF to come clean on how or IF its possible to run digital clones in different situations. There are functions going on all over the place that we may not see or hear until its too late. I got blasted HARD by the forum douchebags on this issue, but I still think its important

fifth buss FX are POST fader!!! if the buss effect is a compressor, the volume in effect becomes the threshold control! How are you supposed to turn up or down a track if this is the INPUT volume instead of the output??? you have to go to the last fx in the chain and control volume from there, not so acceptable!

sixth buss routing: Busses are stereo only. If you want track 1 to go to channel 1 of your hardware, you need to pan that track hard left! If that channel is also going to a send effect, now it is only going to the LEFT side of that effect! NOT GOOD!!! there are workarounds, but not really any acceptable ones, also who knows what math happens when you pan that signal?

seventh fx parameter automation: Other apps have had this for quite a while, I think its about time WE got some love

eighth sidechains...there ARE sidechainable dx fx out there but dx latency causes the action to happen at the wrong time, hardly productive!

tons of others, but these are the ones killing me right now and most relevant to traditional recording and mixing techniques in my stupid humble opinion.

if you give a rats ass
