Vegas Pro vs. Cakewalk

Ok...here's the MILLION dollar question:

Which has the better sound quality, control, interface, editing and is the best overall value in your opinion?

I understand that the sound card and sampling rate have much more to do with sound quality than the program per se, but I am still interested.

My band recorded our drum tracks to ADAT and flew them into CakeWalk (not certain of the version...it was 1998/99) and we were pretty disappointed in the sound we got. It might have been the engineer, but we've heard alot of things he'd done that were WAY better...he now says that he "wishes he'd had Vegas back then"

Hi Robbie,

The sound quality on both are equal They will be only as good as the sound card that you use. I have both programs and I use them extensively. Cakewalk Pro 9 is still the "go to" program when you just need to get things done quickly. Also remember, that Vegas Pro doesn't offer a mixer on-board. However, Vegas Pro has lots of hidden/cool features that I keep find myself going back to. It is extremely powerful, if you can discover all the hidden "things" in it.

Vegas Pro looks a lot like Acid while Cakewalk definitely is a much more "visually dedicated" program. In Cakewalk Pro 9 you can have your mixer, FX's, wave editing,track and other views setup the way that you want them. I find that very important since I prefer to work in a specific way most of the time. Don't get me wrong, Vegas Pro still amazes when I see the wave files being drawn as I record and I still hate the fact that Cakewalk can't process FX's without first stopping the program, but I really think that Cakewalk has to get the nod.

FYI, I use a lot of programs including Cubase VST, Samplitude 24/96, Cool Edit Pro, etc... For example, I simply save my file (as a GM file)from Cakewalk and then open VST and use its superior "groove" processes, save it, go to another program, etc. I guess I'm very lucky that I have the ability to have so many programs, but if I could only have one...well, it would have to be Cakewalk.
