Vegas Multitracking Help! (beginner)

Hi,

I am new to computer recording, (I'm using Vegas and a Delta 44) and can't figure this out... When I record onto track one, (say, a drum track) I then disengage recording on track one, and engage recording for track two, then record the new track two. When I play it back, I have both track one and two recorded on track two. If I continue on, and record track three, unless I mute tracks one and/or two, I get the sum of all on my new track three. This defeats the whole multitracking idea, and the quality degrades as the tracks stack up. Am I missing something? Thanks for any help.
 
I also use Vegas and The Delta 10/10 card, (I love both!)
I am only guessing here, but I think that you have some sort of routing problem happening, I would suggest to go in and check your vegas routing, then check the delta patchbay/router.

Check the M-Audio routing, and make sure, when recording, that you have the correct INPUTS for the track. :)

I'll elaborate on this one, cuz I once made the same mistake (I think).

Make sure that when you push the red button to arm for recording, that you then push the number that appears to the left of the 'record' button, and choose left or right and NOT stereo. Another important thing to check is where your Output is routed in Vegas. Make sure it is going somewhere other than the same channel you are using for input.

On my Aark DP 24/96 I always route the output to channels 5/6. I then have 1/2 and 3/4 to record.

Still not working...

Ok, so the above reply was from work... Now I've rushed home to try this out. I understand what you're saying, but I think something is wrong... I can't select Delta 1/2 or 3/4. I have one option, "Delta 44". If I could choose between 1/2 & 3/4 I could pan it l/r to create 4 tracks (or more)... This I completely understand. Do you think it's a hardware/software issue? In the Delta 44 control panel, the 4 inputs & outputs function as they should, and in the router/patchbay section, I've tried every combination and I still have no luck. I am essentialy stuck with a stereo input or two mono tracks, which won't fly... Please tell me I've missed something!
 
I am not at the studio right now, so for me to answer your question, you'll have to wait until mid-day on Thursday. But... Queue will probably beat me to it :D .

Drivers? Have you tried downloading and reinstalling your Delta drivers? Follow instructions as to whether or not you should uninstall the old driver first.

Thanks once again. I'll have to wait til I'm home to try that. I reinstalled the driver last night (without first uninstalling) and the same thing was happening. I'll try uninstalling/reinstalling later. This may be a silly question, but I am running Windows 2000 professional, and am using the NT drivers, do you think this could be my problem? After dropping some cash this week on the Delta card and Vegas, I'd be more than willing to go back to 98 to get this to go. Let me know what you think. Thanks!
 
BINGO!!!!

Mixing and matching OS's and driver versions is definitely asking for trouble. I found this comment on M-Audio's site in reference to the Win2K driver Ver: 5.12.1.20

WDM and ASIO support for Windows 2000. MME programs will see a 16-bit stereo input only.

Sounds familiar, eh?

If you're gonna use WIN2K, you'll need the Delta Beta WDM Multiclient driver (Ver: 5.12.1.20). If I were you, I'd go read everything on this page.

Looks like you can uninstall the NT driver (uninstalling seems important with Delta drivers), then install the multiclient WDM Beta. Sounds a bit easier than formatting and going to 98.

I'm pretty sure we've nailed down what the problem is.

I'm gonna let you do the research on which solution (more of a preference thing, Stable OS with Beta drivers vs. less Stable OS and Production Drivers.)

'Tworked!

I ran home on my lunch break, uninstalled/reinstalled the updated driver, and just like that, it worked. I wish I had known about the updated 2000 driver a few days ago... I've been pulling my hair out! When Vegas recognizes the card appropriately, it's amazing how easy it is! Thank you ever so much for the help, I very much appreciate it.
