What Pres go Where for Drum Tracking?
I have just gotten these Pres:
(2) RNPs w/ constituent RNCs racked together
thanks Mercenery.. they even sent me a box of GirlScout Cookies!
(2) ART Pro Channels
My Drummer who plays very similarly to Billy Cobham and Bill Bruford ..(we are an Instrumental Heavy Jazz Fusion/Progressive/Mathrock band ..) so there are tons of dynamics and complicated intricate drum patterns etc. Lots of heavy hitting and then boom .. instant dynamic drop off .. into a clean part.. folks familiar with prog/fusion know what I mean. None of our material has a consistant "boom boom crash crash" .. mono dynamic thingie going on. That having been said (or written), everything goes direct (now that I have the Pres) into a Alesis HD24. I have (2) more RNCs but probably will not Compress (maybe just the kick or snare) while tracking. My drummer uses lots of "ghost note snare stuff" .. and maybe Comping at track time will help those transients ..
So what I have mic'd are Kick, Snare, Two Rack Toms (1 mic) and Two Floor Toms (1 mic), Two Overheads and Hi Hat.
What Pre would folks recommend for what job..?
My initial thought would be:
Kick / Snare thru the 1st RNP
maybe w/ the RNC.. any strong opinions about using comps here?
Both Tom Set-Ups thru the 2nd RNP
hey.. what the heck.. it's there .. maybe thru the RNC's racked next to it .. any opinions here too?
Both OverHead Mics to the ART Pro Channels
probably bypassing the Comps and EQs there .. any strong opinions of these stages' use during tracking?

Any advice would be welcomed .. I will probably, of course, try different set ups; but if some one has done a lot of testing and work using these combinations of Pres for drums - I would be foolish to not avail myself to the knowledge someone else may possess.
Just as aside ... those RNCs are wonderful! I can't help myself.. but EVERYTHING thru the "Real Nice Mode" sounds great .. even Snare and Kick where using the "NormalMode" is suggested .. I dunno.. am I just "Real Nice Mode Crazy"?? Does anybody even use the RNCs in "Normal"?
