Value Powered Monitors

I'm currently on a meagre budget of around $300 or less AUD and I'm after some active monitors that are real value for money in this range.

My initial impulse was to go with the Edirol MA-10Ds but after reading that they are basically just hyped up PC-speaker equivalents, I figure all I'd use them for is the the features.

I've searched this forum and found alot of people putting in good words for the Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2's. These are seeming appealing, if slightly out of my budget mark.

Is there any models in particular that you guys would suggest?
 
I use and like the Event TR5's. A little lite in the bass, but a clean, accurate sound none the less - no mid-mush. Small enough to fit nicely on almost any desk. $299 new, less on E-bay.
 
I use and second Michealst on the TR-5's.
For the money they're great.
 
I'm in a similar situation. There are so many mid-range monitors out there it's really hard to choose. What about the KRK's? I've read a lot of good things about them as well.
 
I messaged the guy on here who can apparently get the Diamonds for $275USD, but he gave me a quote of $370USD /w shipping here to Australia. This sets me back again... I have to start the search all over.

Thanks alot for the TR5 suggestions guys.. if they're readily available here for an acceptable price, I'll have to look into them. It's just that equipment costs so much more after it's imported here... it's so irritating.
 
Moonlapse, if you can find an Australian dealer of the Wharfedales please let me know! I'm sort of half looking for monitors at the moment as well, and kind of leaning towards the KRK Rokit RP6s which are about $750 Aussie dollars. I hate it how things are so damn expensive over here!
 
sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you won't get much for $300aud. perhaps go for passive and get a $50 amp from cash converters, i've seen tannoy reveal passives going for $520 (mannys, musiclab sales) these would sound better (even through a shitty amp) than the behringer actives, then you can always upgrade the amp in the future and you'll have a decent set of speakers for life.

I was reading the forums and trying to decide if I wanted to join when I ran across this post on value monitors. I have purchased a Samson Resolv setup (2 50a satellites and a 120a subwoofer), and find them quite good. now... of course theyre not Genelecs or Mackie 824s or anything in that class, but for a total layout of about $450 USD I have the full range of sound at volume levels that can reach relatively uncomfortable SPLs (not that I advocate 'burning' one's ears with excessive volume). I've recently read that the Resolv 65a setup is quite good, and perhaps I'll upgrade later, but for now I find that the 50a nearfields combined with the active sub work really well for mixing. I've not really gotten my feet wet in the mastering thing yet, although I'm teetering on the edge, now... I find that the input/output in these forums is helpful without being snotty. cool - very cool.

Anyway I hope that someone finds this helpful.
