Spread the Daf!
Just saw that Musicians' Friend has the V57 on sale for $40. I got one from muzeman in a trade and it has become my favorite mic. I don't have expensive mics but I have a SM-57, NT-1, V93 and a (shudder) AKG 3000b and the best sounding one to me is the V57. At $40 it's steal. Go out and buy on. Do it now! :).

Good find Lt. Bob

I saw them too. But are they any different sounding than the V67? I have 2- V67's. Anyone think the V57's will be a good edition 2 my mic locker?

John

All I have is a V 93 so I can't say. I do prefer it to the V93 though.

I ordered mine today.

A 1006/V57/V63 for $39.99?

Steal.

I took two.

Get yours before they're gone.

I have 2 V67 and love'em. And ordered 2 V57 today. Should be a nice add to the old cabinet.

I wish they would ship worldwide...
I already have one, and for some applications, this mic just works.
For some singers, it fits like nothing else.

I paid 80$ for mine at Sam Ash, about two years ago, and it was considered a steal...

waht are these supposed to sound like when comapred to say a Sm57 and a V67?

They're not as "late night DJ" sounding as the V67.
For lack of a better word, I'd use "airy", but not as bright/harsh as the V93. It has a slight boost in the ~200hz range. It usually takes some EQ on most voices.
Personally, I love it on solo accoustic guitars.
Comparing to the SM-57... These are totally different animals, so it's hard to tell. The SM is more "compressed" I dunno...

Hey, 40$ can't go wrong! If you don't have like 50 mics in your cabinet, I'd go for it.

Just an FYI: The V57 is a V63 is a 1006.

Seems to me it'd be worth the extra $5 to get the V63 and have the option of using battery power. Anyone disagree?

My 1006 sounds like ass through my first preamps...a Behringer mixer and an audio buddy...

But it sounds really good on the Q10. I'm kind of surprised, honestly, since the general idea is that transformerless mics don't typically have the huge leaps in sound quality going from preamp to preamp as dynamics and transformer balanced condensers.

I'm currently using mine for voiceovers and sound effects for a small video game project.

I have no opinion on the battery thing, but me, all my preamps have phantom power, and I haven't needed to take it out in the field with, say, a portable DAT with preamp and no phantom.

Well, I ordered one from MF, and just got it yesterday.
For $39.99 I was willing to take a chance. I can always use
another condensor, and it's an unthinkable price at $39.99.
So ol' Sponge Bob did his own little mic comparrison test
using the following mics through a 16 channel Mackie...

MXL V57M
AT 4033
MXL V67
MK 319

Now, before I get into what I "Heard", this isn't a mic shoot out,
and I'm not going to quote each mics freq response and data.
I have found that over the years, most data that comes with mics
is really production propoganda. The real test is using your ears.
If you feel the need to test your mics freq response, then by all
means, you can easilly perform your own test, which is actually
fun if you've got the time. So, this "Comparrison" is about first
impressions, using a male voice, and my ears.

Firstly, I opened it up, and blam- this mic is BUTT Ugly.
Baby Crap Brown. Nothing like the photos. I've heard it
call champagne, but its just plain ugly. NOT that it really
matters for a mic, but I like sexy gear. This thing is homely.

So, First I plugged each mic in, one after another, to become
familiar with each one with voice-

AT 4033- (I love this mic) good full range sound, not overly
hyped to my ears, warm and very clear high end with a good
output level. Has options too, ie bass cut, & pad.

MXLV67- Less clarity in the high end, and weaker output level.
This unit has more self noise compared to the 4033, but still,
adjusting the level and eq, this mic is a great value at the under
$100 level. No Bass cut, no pad.

MK319- As everyone knows, this thing is dark, but it also sounded
warmer than the V67. Output level was hotter too. Better be
ready to use the eq to find a workable sound with this mic.
I've heard of people finding these for $50 at GC before, but I
really wouldn't pay much more than that. I don't like this mic.
Its construction is a little better than a diaphram within a tin can.
But it does has a flimsy bass cut & pad.

OK, Now on to the V57M...
The Pros- Suprisingly enough, it wasn't too bad. It is very
different from its brother the V67. This mic is very BRIGHT.
It has that airy sheen that mic companies love to boost. Probably
in the 7k-12k and up range - guessing.
It also has a better outout level than the V67 I am using,
resulting in a lower self noise. Its ouput was very close to the
4033. It's also a solid unit. not flimsylike that MK319 peice of work.
It would probably be a decent overhead mic, and at 39.99 each,
and a pair would be cheap. So, IMHO it is more usable than the 319, and just as usable at the V67, just a different sound.

The Cons- You are going to HAVE TO EQ this mic. It's just plain
bright. And anyone who does alot of complex multitracing knows
how crucial it is to get tracks to sit well with each other. Other
than being ugly and on the bright side, man... for $39 bucks, you
really can't go wrong on this mic. If you are looking to add to your
collection, need a voice over, or overhead mic etc... I'd say it's
a steal. Side note- I really think a "shinning star" of a mic is still
the 4033, and if you ever get a chance to pick one up, you'll see
what I mean. Probably one of the best values ever in a mic
IMHO.

I appreciate how people on this board share their "findings" &
deals on gear with others. Lets keep up the good work.

Thanks Sponge, extremely useful post.

Did you happen to make any observations regarding the mics pick-up patterns?

Yes, it is a cardiod only design, with no pad or bass cut.
The proximity effect is very usefull with this mic.
I found it to be slightly more evident than the V67,
but it could be my ears being fooled due to the hotter
output of the V57M. Definately a cool cheap mic.

Thanks for the great info! i think im gonna be pickin up a pair of these mics here.

Hey what are you using for a shockmount for this mic considering it doesnt come with one?

I'm sorry to blatantly bump this post but I really would like to know shockmount solutions (or whatd be great if you could get away without one) before I buy them (but still get them before the sale runs out).

Anyone??

Thanks
