Yo, Drummerboy! My entire first album is being tracked on
a VS1824CD, and that's OK. My read on thism bad boy is- it's pres suck, it's A-D converter is weak, but it's reliable, and can record very good sound as long as you feed it a signal that is already digital.
The problem is the VS1824 has only one S/PDIF in, so you can only send 2 tracks to it digitally simultaneously, which is mostly OK for my project. For drums, we'll have to send 4 of 6 tracks to the Roland analog. All the pres are outboard, I haven't turned the input gain knobs up from zero in 6 months.
The other problem with the Roland is its backup CD format is proprietary, so to export the raw tracks to Protools for mixing and mastering, the tracks have to be pulled off the Roland 2 at a time, in real time, by S/PDIF. The 2480 has much better options for exporting the audio data. Nonetheless, we're cutting a full blown studio album on this thing, and I think it will be a good one. I will say this, it's a lot quieter than a PC, and a lot more portable.-Richie
