Usual windows mixer question

Okay, stuff the report:D

My BIOS manual says:
(Auto) allows the BIOS to detect whether you are using any audio device. If it is detected, the onboard audio controller is enabled. If no audio device is detected, it is disabled. Configuration options: (Disabled or enabled)

It is currently disabled cos if it is enabled, I can't see my delta drivers in Sonar.

But I didn't check to see if I can see em in device manager.

I'll reboot with the BIOS audio enabled, see what happens and I'll post back.
 
Okay, have set the mobo audio to (Auto). Multimedia is set to "use any available device" and now lists the both the delta drivers and the SoundMAX drivers as options. In device manager, I can see both devices listed.

So what do I do now?
 
Selecting the delta drivers in Mul;timedia still doesn't allow Sonar to see em:(
 
Does any other audio-programs allow you to use the Delta?
 
Bingo. Set the BIOS to (Auto), disabled the SoundMax drivers in this profile, rebooted and now the Delta drivers show up in Sonar:D

Wavelab sees Delta too. Should I just set the driver in Wavelab to MME-WDM Microsoft Sound Mapper, Delta or Delta ASIO?

And in Multimedia, should I set the MIDI driver to Roland or SoundMAX? Or doesn't it matter?
 
And in Multimedia, what should teh preferred device be set to? Any or Delta? And should the check box be ticked for "use only preferred drivers?"

I would say no reason to use the Microsoft mapper, so it's down to whether you want to use the ASIO driver or the regular one for the Delta.

And in Multimedia, should I set the MIDI driver to Roland or SoundMAX? Or doesn't it matter?

Depends on if you disabled the SoundMax's MIDI drivers along with the rest of it. Do you have a MIDI interface besides that?

I think it doesn't matter, but since there is only the one device why not just set it explicitly? Not sure if cheking that check box would have any effect on performance at all.

When you say "midi interface" do you mean physical interface or drivers? I have enabled the mobo midi inteface which gives me the Roland drivers and the games joystick port. But I intend only to use the USB connection.

I would like to use midi outside of sonar, maybe with other programs but don't know if I can. Any suggestions?
 
Also, after all the work this afternoon to get my delta and mobo soundcard drivers to be seen by windows at the same time, I note with interest that I then disabled the Soundmax drivers "in this h/ware profile". So what have I gained?:confused:

Paul, if I followed this thread correctly, you disabled the Soundmax because you couldn't get the Delta to show up in Sonar. Correct?

If so, the problem is most likely a WDM-MME issue. What version of Sonar are you running? If it's pre-2.2, you should go into Options > Audio > Advanced and click the checkbox to use MME drivers evern when WDM drivers are present. Then close Sonar and re-enable the Soundmax. When you start Sonar again, it should find the Delta and profile it.

However, you are still going to have another issue. The Soundmax is in all probablity a 16 bit card. Therefore you will be limited to 16 bit if you leave it enabled in Sonar. My suggestion would be to disable it in Sonar, except for it's midi capability (I assume it has onboard midi).

Not quite. Or sort of. The problem I had was that originally, I couldn't hear my guitar playback when I was recording a further track using the Delta drivers. I thought I had a windows mixer problem. Thats what started me off on this thread cos I couldn't enable the win mixer. So I then loaded the mobo audio drivers.

But then I found out I hadn't set up the Delta mixer properly, so after some tweaks I could then hear playback whilst recording.:rolleyes: So the windows mixer was a wild goose chase.

And then I noticed that if I enabled my soundmax drivers, by enabling the mobo audio in the BIOS, they disabled my delta drivers in Sonar and installed only the S/max drivers.

So now, thanks to yours and Moskus advice, I have enabled my mobo audio so I can both sets of drivers in Device Manager but then disabled the S/max drivers "in this h/ware profile".

If you see Moskus's first post in this thread, he asks if I can't have both the audio and delta drivers enabled at the same time. And the answer then was "no". Well now I can...except that I now have to disable the s/max in Device manager instead of the BIOS. But I have also fine tuned Sonar by using the MME drivers box as you suggested, so it has been a journey of discovery for me.:)

The bottom line is, that my delta and Sonar are working well together (they were before, notwithstanding the fact that I diodn't set the delta mixer up properly) and the performance of the DAW is amazing, no more fx crashes for me:) .....yet!

Over the weekend I'll be adding a few more synths and seeing what it can do, pushing it more and more. But so far, so good.:)

And Paul, don't forget to run WaveProfiler in SONAR everytime you made a change of your setting. I mean... everytime you made a change of your setting!!

I was interested in this thread because my next MOBO will be an ASUS P4PE without RAID. So I was pleased to see a resolution to this particular conflict.

Did some guitar recording last night, puter didn't crash once. Lets hope it continues that way.

Hi Bluesmeister, in spite of my hassles, I would recommend the ASUS P4PE to anyone. Its only my finger problem that gets me into these scrapes. That and not knowing what I'm doing. Interesting differences between this forum and the SOS BB. From my perspective, this is much more friendly and helpful, the SOS has some real nutters at times who spoil the threads. I'm not saying that the SOS members aren't helpful, but they don't appear to have the same motivation to stick with a guy who needs help as the members in this forum do. And my problem today is a case in point.
Martin Walker and a few of the editorial team members appear with pearls of wisdom pretty regularly and thats always interesting.
And of course, our very own Moskus also makes regular appearences there too:)

Yes, I should have acknowledged reading Mokus's posts over there, too.

I read SOS just about every weekday at work. The war of words that often takes place between XG and ScottDru is just unbelievable! :) Always good entertainment.

I agree that over here on HomeRec we try to see the problem through to it's conclusion. Although there was one case I was involved with, some guy called SIPI (something or other) and his Terratec audio card. I never found out if he sorted out his problem. :(

So tell me Paul, what's so significant about August 1981?

XG is actually the reason I moved to this BBS. When I discovered online discussion, I started with the ComputerMusic forum. And back then XG was not banned there yet. So he kept talking about 56kpbs MP3s as "nothing is better" and his £5.28 soundcard, so I moved to the SOS-forum...

Well, 3 days later XG found the SOS forum too...


Ok, I go for the HR.COM/BBS and he hasn't appeared yet. And I do think that this place will destroy him if he appears! :D

Moskus, if that pillock, xg, ever finds his way to this BB I will personally find out where he lives and shove a cricket stump where the sun doesn't shine.:) What a plonker! And I ain't too sure about Scott Dru either:rolleyes:

Funny, but this BB has always been the same friendly place, I think its cos our American cousins are generally much more polite. No, seriously, I do think that:) Along with Aussies and Nogs.:D And not forgetting Indonesians either;) Yes sir, a very friendly place:)
