Using USB drive

Lately my diskspace is getting smaller and smaller so I thought I would give the USB drive a chance. So I save my song on the USB drive and set to use all the 16 buffers. When I play the song the USB drive cannot handle. Hmmmm, Is there a way to speed up the USB drive?

Not significantly. The bandwidth of USB 1.x is just too low.

Even that USB2 is much faster, I wouldn't try to use it for recording...

Okay, one track and you're fine. But two or more? No no...

I have one (1.1) and it's slow as hell. I use it like I'd use a floppy - to take a file over to another PC. About all it's good for.

Fortunately, it's also cheap.

Now when you are saying a USB 'drive' are you referring to the memory keys or the USB Flash Drive...

Either would be too slow, unfortunately as the others have said, the transfer rate of USB is too slow for audio.

Firewire on the other hand might be an option if you are looking to external storage.

The other idea is to save your data (back it up) on the USB drive and then record on to your local drive.

Of and this question would probably have been more appropriate over in the Computer Recording and Soundcards Forum on this BBS.

I agree the USB is probably too slow. But people need to not be so hard on it when they are supporting Firewire. Firewire is 400 mbits/sec, USB 2.0 is 480 mbits/sec. So why do people think that firewire is better?

More mature drivers. 480 mbits is under absolutely perfect conditions with a perfectly written driver. 1394 is hot swappable, no right clicking to remove. It's also possible to share one device between two computers at the same time.

I'm not baggin' on it bit it's a MS/Intel thing and it's all about money which is fine but 1394 is more mature and will be for a quite awhile.

USB 2 cables are cheaper :D
