Using the MD8 with a Mackie mixer

Just curious if any of you are using a mixer along with your MD8. I use the 1642VLZ. It has 8 direct outs, post EQ/Fader and great mic pre amps. For play back, I connect the MD8 directly to my power amp and listen through monitors. Can you think of any advantage using the direct outs of the MD8 pre EQ/Faders to connect back to the 1642 for play back? The reason I ask is that during recording, you have to disconnect the direct outs from the MD8 to the mixer because it creates a problematic loop. It's a little troublesome to connect and disconnect all 8 direct outs between playback and recording.

I take it you don't like the MD8 mixer section? From my experience, if you don't like something, you do what you have to to get around it. Can I ask why your trying to use the 1642 with the MD8? I know the manual has a diagram for doing that but why is another question.

Peace,
Dennis

For recording purposes, I use the Mackie mixer for its mic preamps. Also, I can use more than 2 condensor mics at a time (up to eight although the most I've ever used is 4 per take). The mixer has 8 direct outs, post eq/trim/aux/fader. Anyway, for playback it's a little cumbersome if I want to playback through the mixer. In the beginning, I've been hooking the MD8 directly to the power amp/monitor speakers. However, the mixer on the MD8 doesn't sound as good as the Mackie. So now I've been hooking the MD8 to the Mackie first and then to the power amp/monitors. It just requires that you connect and disconnect the mixer between recording and playback. Was wondering how others manage a situation like this.

Note the "MD8/POD" connection on channel 15/16. It gets muted when recording. We use the inserts for direct outs (half-normalled), and just leave them in there like that (regular instrument cables there).

We try to use as much gain as possible from the Mackie pre's (although they're not your VLZ ones), but I give the MD-8 a bit above 0 gain so that I can turn it down quick during a take.

Dig it.
