Using SB Live! and Audiophile 24/96

Hello
I am setting up my computer studio using both the SB Live for midi triggered sampled sounds and the Audiophile 24/96 to record audio tracks. I would like the sounds from the SB Live to come through the 24/96. I hope to acomplish this by buying the creative labs digital I/O card that attaches to the SB Live and use the S/PDIF out on the SB to hook up to the S/PDIF in on the 24/96. Then mix the S/PDIF signal in on the mixer page of the 24/96. Has anyone done this?
What software recording program would work well in this application?
I am considering Cubasis VST and Cakewalk Home Studio 2002
 
Having a similar discussion at the Cakewalk forum. I have both cards installed, but am not routing via SPDIF. What I assume you want to do is get sound font output into your host as audio. If you are a big users of sound fonts I recommend you look strongly at SONAR, as it will let you use Live Synth DXi instead of the native SBLive sound font synth to play sound fonts, and then you can bounce your sound font midi track directly to audio, staying digital the whole time. In fact, if you do this you don't need the SBLive at all. I only keep mine for convenience sake since I have an old PIII 550 and too many DXis will overload the CPU.

But, if you want to do the SPDIF routing, I don't see why it wouldn't work. I guess you just have to make sure to match up your clocking. How much is the CL SPDIF card? Might be able to use that money to bump up to SONAR.
 
What's the point of routing the SB Live's output to the Audiophile? Record it internally via the SB Live's own audio stream. No muss, no fuss. The SB Live sounds are 16-bit so you don't gain anything by routing it out.

Right, what Alchuck describes is possible, but only with a host like SONAR and a DXi like LiveSynth (unless there's something Alchuch knows that I don't).

HI There Recs.,..could you please be a little more especific on "... dont need the SB...i´m thinking of buying the Audiophile 24/96 and i have the Audigy Gamer that i use for soundfonts but i´m not very happy with it..i´m only keeping it because of the soundfonts.

LiveSynth DXi allows you to play sound fonts in any compatible DXi host (like SONAR) regardless of sound card. Upside: soundfont size only limited by amount of RAM, downside: adds some CPU overhead.

I have used Alchucks method of getting a wave file recorded from my midi sound blaster and that works great!! I do not have ANY recording software. The ideas you have given me Regs also work well but to buy sonar and the add ons for the DXi is past my budget at this time.
I have been using a program called Superjam to compose midi backup tracks for years to practice. Recently I downloaded Pro Tools Free to start recording.
One thing leads to another...
Now I have my guitar hooked to a Roger Linn AdrenaLinn hooked up to a behringer 602 that is connected to the 24/96 audiophile card (That I bought because the SB did not record audio very well). My computer is a celeron 1 gig wirh 512 megs ram. The Pro tools that I was going to use does not see both cards so I can't route them to record the midi and record with the 24/96!
I am using the demo of sonar but I have a budget of about $100 on software.
Any recomendations on Home Studio 2002 or Cubase?

Well, Cubase is in the same price range as SONAR, and Home Studio is ~$90. Have you looked at n-track? It natively supports both vsti and DXis, which I don't think any other host does, and it only costs $42 (www.n-track.com). I've heard great things about it. There is an n-track user forum here, you should check it out.
 
Actually, Home Studio looks like it might be the thing for you since it includes the Virtual Sound Canvas DXi. In another thread in this forum a HS user said he uses VSC instead of his SB synth and prefers the sound. That could be your answer. THen you can add more softsynths later if you're so inclined and your budget works. If you go this route I strongly recommend buying either the (I don't know the advantages of one over the other). There are a lot of great, cheap or free vsti softsynths and effects out there.

I did look at N track. Have the demo. I could not see an easy way to route the sound card sources. With Sonar it is a breeze! And I think the sound synth options in Home studio give an edge. The program I was looking at Steinberg is Cubasis that sells for around $75. Steinbergs competeing program to home studio. I will try the download demo of Cubase and see what it does. There is no demo of cubasis or home studio that I can find.
 
Ah, gotcha. You might check the forum re. that routing issue.
