Using R84 Ribbon Mics on Distorted Gtr Tones

I have a pair of R84 Ribbons that I haven't used in some time. I tried them on guitar some time back but wasn't impressed. Well, I decided to give them another go today and I'm really surprised. I think I like it.

The Mics are about 2.5 ft in front of the cab. The cab is a Mesa 2x12 loaded with a V30 and GS1275. Each mic is infront of a speaker.

mackie preamps and not in this case... very moderate gain setting. but I agree, these mics generally do need gain.
 
in case you're wondering, I've had to revert to an old moniker... not one that I want to use but my account is screwed up and admins won't respond.
