Semolina Pilchard (is that a person?)
Yeah, that was John's sly dig at Detective Sergeant Norman Pilcher who was a bent cop. It was he who went on a crusade to bust pop stars for drugs in the late 60s. He was in on the Stones busts involving Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones, he was in on the busts of Harrison and Lennon and quite a few more. He ended up going to jail for planting false evidence some years later. Irony personified.
Although Lennon and Harrison never made any secret of their drug use, both were adamant until they died that their actual busts were plants. Lennon said he'd been tipped off weeks in advance by the journalist, Don Short {a guy Lennon didn't like and always tried to get rid of but Short was one of that new breed of journalists that ingratiated themselves with the newly emerging rock aristocracy and I suspect Short's tip off was part of this sycophancy} and cleared the flat of all drugs, saying Hendrix had lived there before he moved in with Yoko, he wasn't stupid !
Harrison made the famous statement after his bust "I'm a tidy man. I keep my socks in the socks draw and my stash in the stash box. Anything else, they [the cops]must have brought."
"I am the walrus" has always seemed a mysterious song but for anyone genuinely interested, you really need to read Ian McDonald's critique of it in his sensational book, "Revolution in the head". I could explain it.....but dinner calls !
You can go to him !
