Using outboard gear during mixdown?

Hey everyone!

I was wondering how I would be able to use an outboard eq, and compressor after recording invidivual tracks to Cubase. I want to be able to use outboard gear during mixdown also, but I have NO IDEA what is needed for me to do this. I will be using a Yamaha MG166FX mixer into a delta 1010. I use Cubase VST 32 to record and mix.

You basically need two things (in my world anyway):

1) Some kind of summing surface/analog console

2) Digital to Analog conversion.

The mutiple D/A's (16 channels minimum for most rock music, jazz or acoustic stuff can be less) go into a patch bay. The outputs are usually normalled to the line inputs of the analog console (which can range from 16-skies the limit number of channels). The analog processing is put somewhere in the patchbay and the normal is 'broken' by going from the D/A into the comp or EQ, then assigned back to the line going to the board. You can get by without a patchbay, but it's somewhat unorganized at best. If you are super anal and don't mind always unplugging and plugging ends of snakes or seperate cables in and out, no patchbay will be fine. A cheap patchbay setup, along with the extra cables can run a minimum of $300-$500 extra, it really depends on your setup and what quality of patchbay you need. I went with the cheaper $100 Neutriks for my B main tracking room, they should last at least 3-4 years and they are so inexpensive I can replace them without having to worry about it.
 
Does AtlasProAudio.com sell patchbays, bychance?
 
Humm...seems like a lot of work...I think for now I'll just stick with plugins for eq and run SLIGHT compression while recording certain things. Later on I will probably get set-up to use outboard effects during mixdown.

All you have to do is run the outputs of the Delta into the FX processors then record the output of the FX on to a new track(s). You can use the mixer or go straight from the soundcard to the FX. A patchbay would make it easier to setup but it's not neccessary.
